Position Summary:The Senior Maintenance Technician is the lead coordinator for the Maintenance shift team. This Shift team reports to the Maintenance Supervisor. This position is required to lead a crew of technicians in the set-up, adjustment, repair, maintenance and support of machinery and mechanical equipment for the safe, efficient, and productive operation of the Channel and Buoy production facilities This role participates in the execution of capital projects related to the installation of new equipment and lines and the redesign of existing equipment and lines. Work is performed under the general direction of the Maintenance Supervisor with some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment in performing day-to-day assignments; lead and/or train other line technicians; may be on-call for emergency or unscheduled repairs. Required to perform all duties safely and in conformance to the W.M. Barr Safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure ALL safety guidelines are followed, always, and immediately respond to deficiencies appropriately.
  • Reviews Job Plans pertaining to the work orders daily for repair and maintenance of machinery and mechanical equipment including engines, motors, pneumatic tools, mixers, packaging equipment, conveyor systems, and other production machines and facility equipment; estimates material requirements and repairs or replaces defective parts as needed; analyzes mechanical and other operations problems; takes appropriate corrective action; reports all unsafe equipment, machinery, and practices to Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Prioritizes conflicting production needs and work schedules, ensures proper execution and completion of work plans.
  • Primary contact for the manufacturing Team Lead on shift. Actively Participate & communicates throughout the shift in resolution or either the work or problems.
  • Communicates daily with Maintenance Supervisor and Maintenance Planner regarding all successes and opportunities.
  • When necessary, resolves all team conflicts in a professional manner and involves Maintenance Supervisor when needed.
  • Coach and mentor team as necessary to ensure all maintenance initiatives are adhered to (i.e., participating in continuous improvement activities and completion of daily maintenance schedules).

Position Description

  • Supports Continuous Improvement initiatives. Including, but not limited to: T1 meetings, T2 meetings Break Down Analysis, CILT, Centerline, AM, 5S, etc.
  • Direct and manage resources to ensure daily production objectives are met.
  • Read and comprehend blueprints and drawings, handbooks, specifications, equipment manuals, parts lists and other written material associated with the job.
  • Diagnoses mechanical and quality problems, determines the necessary repair, and restores defective equipment back to service in a timely manner.
  • Trains or leads other Line Technicians in the performance of day-to-day responsibilities or projects.
  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other mechanical components; performs preventive maintenance as scheduled.
  • Works with Project Engineers to install new equipment, install new lines, and redesign and set up existing production lines. Help create the PMs for new equipment, update existing PM’s and ensure that the labor confirmation is captured when executing all work orders (Emergency, Corrective/non-PM and PM’s).
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as hand welders, sand blaster, drill press, lathe, grinder, and other equipment to repair and fabricate machine parts; uses all tools in accordance with W.M Barr safety guidelines.
  • May check, clean, and maintain boilers; may inspect and repair boiler fittings; may open valves and adjust regulators to control flow through pipelines and/or blow sludge from system.
  • May install and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, and equipment; may measure, cut, and bend conduit and pull wire; may replace faulty electrical components including fuses, light fixtures, relays, switches, and motors; may rewire motors; may review diagrams, specifications, or instructions from Supervisor for repairs, installations, or inspections to be performed.
  • May assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures; may repair and replace gauges, valves, pressure regulators and related equipment; may bend, cut, thread, shape, and fabricate pipe.
  • May perform routine repairs to heating and air conditioning systems or equipment.
  • May operate cutting torch or welding equipment to fabricate equipment by cutting, burning, and joining various metals; may repair equipment by using welding techniques and appropriate gas or electric welding equipment.
  • May install, repair, calibrate, service and replace electronic devices and systems.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records of purchases, daily activities, work orders, preventive maintenance, etc.
  • Ensures tools and work areas meet W.M Barr housekeeping and 5S standards.

Qualifications/Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. is required and seven to ten years’ experience in general repairs and line maintenance in a manufacturing environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred an Associate Technical 2 yr. degree or diploma from a Technical Institution.

  • Must have mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficient with hand tools and fasteners, transmission, and pneumatic systems.
  • Trade school certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with hands and use various tools.
  • Computer proficient and experience with computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Able to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be organized with good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.

Lead Maintenance Technician

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel:

  • Manufacturing environment with loud noise level.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, talk, hear and see for extended periods of time; regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds; specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, correspondence; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak and present information in small groups of suppliers or employees of the company.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret diagrams and charts.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions given in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to have limited exposure to fumes or airborne particles; ability to work near moving equipment; ability to climb in overhead structures and work beneath machines in close quarters to perform installations, repairs, and maintenance; regularly exposed to vibration; may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock.
