Volusia Sheriff's Office is Hiring a School Crossing Guard Near Ormond Beach, FL

School Crossing Guard - East Side

OPENING DATE: 10/10/2022

CLOSING DATE: This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.

SALARY: $11.00 hourly

HOURS: School Crossing Guards work part-time during the school year and are scheduled to work in the morning and in the afternoon.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

The Volusia Sheriff's Office is seeking Part-Time School Crossing Guards. This position is located at various locations throughout the East Side of Volusia County, Florida (Daytona Beach, South Daytona, Ormond Beach, Holly Hill, Port Orange, New Smyrna, and Edgewater); and will be responsible for specialized work in the regulation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in conjunction with the movement of children to and from school, and is limited to those hours during which the school is opening and closing

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:

(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)

  • Places school sentinel warnings in the roadway at designated places near crossing points and removes them when no longer required.
  • Regulates vehicular and pedestrian traffic at designated crossings to permit children to cross safely.
  • Reports all traffic hazards near school crossings to the supervisor or proper authorities.
  • Reports flagrant traffic violators and/or suspicious persons loitering in the school crossing areas.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of the 10th grade. Working personal telephone (cell phone or landline).

NOTE: Crossing assignments will be based on department discretion and may be changed as needed.

*A pre-employment skills test may be required.

Background Screening: The position will require an extensive background investigation, medical exam and drug screening.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations as it pertains to regulating traffic in school zone.
  • Able to deal professionally with the public.
  • Able to recognize and report to proper authority, hazards or potential hazards in and around school crossings.
  • Able to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Able to listen to and understand information through spoken words.
  • Able to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
  • Able to work under stressful situations.
  • Able to interact effectively with others.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Demands: Light work. Ability to see (near and far vision, peripheral vision, depth perception), hear, talk, bend, walk, step up and down (eg. Curb) reach, grasp, finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness (holding signage with extended arm). Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to quickly respond (with hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears.

Environmental Demands: Outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including rain, wind, cold, heat, humidity, fog, sleet. Ability to tolerate fumes, noise and vibration.

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend technical procedures and instructions; memos, letters, evaluations, summaries. Ability to write compound sentences relaying information, data, and details in evaluations, letters, reports, summaries, and memos. Ability to speak clearly and concisely to layman. Ability to perform general mathematical functions.
