Volusia County, FL is Hiring a Summer Recreation Aide - Environmental Management – Marine Science Center Near Inlet, FL

Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking a Summer Recreation Aide for the Environmental Management Division. This position is located in Ponce Inlet, Florida, and will be responsible for supervising children and conducting recreational activities for the Marine Science Center summer recreational programs.
Note: The Marine Science Center (MSC) Summer Camp Program runs from June 3, 2024, through August 9, 2024.

Illustrative Duties

(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)

  • Assist in conducting recreational activities and education programs.
  • Assist in enforcing rules and regulations.
  • Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
  • Supervise children involved in summer or other recreational programs at county sites and various outside locations.
  • Supervise and assist children in the water.
  • Must be comfortable working long hour’s outdoors and will include hiking and other outdoor activities.
  • Courteously handle inquiries and complaints from public.
  • Assist campers with (canoeing, snorkeling, fishing etc.).
  • Conduct squid and owl pellet dissections with campers in the classroom.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Adheres to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

NOTE: This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.
No experience or formal training required. Must be 21 years of age on or before June 1, 2024 and have graduated High School, completed a GED or completed a High School Equivalency Program. Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire and maintain thereafter. Must have the ability to swim. The preferred candidate having met the minimum qualifications, will have at least two (2) years of experience in outdoor educational programming or environmental education with children and youth.
Note:
  • A social security card is required for payroll purposes.
  • Will be subject to a Level II criminal background check and drug test.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, courteous relationships with children, parents, and co-workers.
  • Ability to work effectively with and coordinate volunteers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to tactfully enforce rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Central Florida flora, fauna and native eco-systems.
  • Ability to swim and operate a small watercraft (e.g., kayak, canoe) may be required based upon area of assignment.
  • Ability and willing to go into water with children, hike, drive vehicles and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Canoeing, Snorkeling, Fishing and Seine Netting are some of the activities the campers will have fun doing and so some knowledge of these is a plus.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
Supervision:
REPORTS TO: The Education Coordinator (EC) or to the Marine Science Center Manager, in EC absence.
SUPERVISES: Volunteers

The position is located in Ponce Inlet, Florida

ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands: Use of fingers, hands, lifting, hearing, speaking, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, climbing, swimming and paddling a canoe/kayak, balancing and stooping. Visual acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception) to operate motorized vehicles.
Environmental Demands: Inside and outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (sun, heat, humidity, cold, rain, dust. noise). Exposure to fresh and salt water.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend professional manuals, policies, procedures, instructions, memos, and letters. Ability to write compound sentences relating information, data, details to layman. Ability to perform basic mathematical functions. Ability to speak clearly and concisely; conversant in practices and procedures of discipline.
