Description

ATTENTION

The Detroit Veterans Housing Program is Hiring for Part-Time Cooks with the availability of working late afternoons and weekends. The starting pay is 14.00 per hour. 

Objective:

To organize, prepare and serve scheduled menu items to population served in accordance with food safety standards.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare and serve scheduled meals based on prescribed menu and donations in accordance with food safety guidelines and regulations
  2. Maintain regular communication with and take work direction from the Lead Cook related to the overall food services operations
  3. Assist in proper hygiene, food handling and storage practices including but not limited to rotating, dating and labeling prepared foods
  4. Maintain cleaning and sanitation schedule for kitchen and dining room in accordance with industry sanitation standards
  5. Monitor, record and report inventory usage and replacement needs
  6. Wear appropriate uniforms and attire
  7. Pick up Food Donations as assigned
  8. Additional Responsibilities
    • Maintain compliance with VOA Michigan policies and procedures
    • Ensure that all duties are carried out in a timely and orderly fashion so that VOA Michigan functions in the most efficient manner possible
    • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • High school degree/GED, plus three to five years experience in restaurant/cafeteria food preparation and cooking or equivalent (such as an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts)
  • ServSafe Certification
  • Knowledge of quantity food preparation, service and storage of food
  • Skill in handling kitchen utensils and equipment properly
  • Ability to follow and complete verbal and/or written directions
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, supervisors, donors and vendors
  • Ability to work flexible schedule
  • Must maintain valid Michigan Drivers License and driving record that meets insurability requirements
