As a Mental Health Co-Responder, you will ride along with police as a mental health professional to de-escalate, assess and link services to individuals who need mental health support and treatment.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Accompany Police Department on mental health related calls to effectively and efficiently provide risk assessment, de-escalation, and linkage to services while working to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and/or emergency department admissions
2. Follow directions from law enforcement with respect to on-scene safety
3. Work face-to-face with consumers in assisting them in the resolution of their crisis while providing intervention and referrals in the least restrictive environment.
4. Provide direct follow up services with individuals and their support systems to ensure needs are met and resources were obtained to prevent further crises
5. Collaborate with local community agencies and service providers to obtain comprehensive knowledge of local resources and a point-of-contact for warm handoffs.
6. Provide trainings and educational opportunities to officers to increase awareness of mental health
7. Proficient computer skills with the ability to maintain accurate and timely data collection and thorough documentation
8. Participate in staff meetings and trainings to allow for self-growth
9. Must have solid organizational skills, be able to function independently while communicating in a professional manner with other healthcare providers, law enforcement, clients and families.
10. Provide a variety of social services to individual patients and their families, identifying psychiatric emergencies by providing a screening using the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs – Short Screener (GAIN-SS)
11. Drive a company or personal vehicle
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Must have a master's degree in the clinical field (social work, counseling or psychology) with the commitment to pursue full licensure and Mandatory Pre-screening Agent status. The ideal candidate must be able to physically respond quickly to avoid danger, including the ability to crouch or kneel. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time, traverse uneven terrain, climb stairs if needed, and able to work in severe weather, including extreme heat or cold. The candidate must be able to lift up to 10 pounds and wear a tight-fitting ballistic vest for an extended period of time, if requested by law enforcement. Above average assessment skills, particularly for suicidal potential and potential to harm others. Able to use good judgment and function well in pressure situations. Must maintain certification in CPR and First Aid. Certification must be completed within first 30 days of employment. Company will provide training.
