The Experiential Brand Design (EBD) studio is a growing practice within Vocon. Our mission is to design experiences that speak, inform, connect, guide and generate positive impact. We create emotional connections within the built environment by communicating a brand’s unique story at every touchpoint. We reach beyond the surface of a brand to discover our clients at their core, uncovering the meaningful storylines that have the power to shift perception.

Role Description

As a part of the EBD studio you’ll work within a collaborative group of strategists, designers and architects while developing strategies, designing experiential storytelling, implementing signage systems and creating immersive environments. As a team member you’ll bring a sense of drive, an appreciation for learning and an ability to work with others to push design. You’ll also come to the table with great communication skills, attention to detail, and a healthy dose of self-awareness. In addition, you’ll be agile, receptive to change, and excited to build something new and experience it evolve.

As a Signage & Wayfinding Designer, you’ll work closely with the Creative Director in developing wayfinding strategies and will be responsible for translating those strategies into effective, integrated signage systems within the built environment. You’ll also work with other studios to ensure designs are effectively integrated into the architecture and interior design while also ensuring code compliance. More importantly, you clearly communicate design objectives to our clients and ensure their understanding of wayfinding needs and objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take design direction and instruction from the Creative Director.
  • Report project progress and status to the Creative Director on a regular basis.
  • Manage client and vendor communication when applicable.
  • Maintain a sense of flexibility in process and workflow.
  • Mentor and guide designers, junior designer, and interns through the design process.
  • Maintain a respectful, professional, and reliable relationship with the team, other Vocon studios, clients, and vendors.
  • Deliver results within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Effectively time manage and execute project work in a timely manner with an understanding of project and fabrication budgets.
  • Communicate with and present to clients as a professional extension of Vocon and the Experiential Brand Design team.
  • Carry multiple projects at a time from strategy and concept design through design development and production.
  • Effectively oversee and delegate design responsibilities between self and project design team (designers, junior designers, and interns).
  • Participate in charrettes and design reviews with the team on various projects.
  • Collaborate with architectural and interior design studios within Vocon while promoting EBD expertise and building confidence and partnerships.
  • Assist in developing effective wayfinding studies and strategies with the Senior Wayfinding Strategist and/or Creative Director.
  • Conduct and gather research supporting evidence-based design and pertaining to visual communication, experience and wayfinding.
  • Conduct site audits to evaluate and determine existing conditions, and clearly translate audits into a documented analysis of opportunities and challenges with appropriate corresponding recommendations.
  • Develop presentations that clearly define conceptual thinking, design intent, content, and strategy for client’s understanding.
  • Develop forward-thinking design solutions that effectively communicate brand, experiential, and wayfinding strategies via two and three-dimensional forms (imagery, sketches, elevations, renderings, etc.).
  • Execute design solutions with sophisticated composition and typographic skills, illustrate effective use of scale within the built environment, utilize intelligent use of form and function, and maintain compliance with state and federal building and safety codes.
  • Collaborate with vendors to determine cost-effective, innovative, and appropriate fabrication methods.
  • Work with vendors to determine efficient and effective intent, shop drawing, and sample/prototype processes and reviews.
  • Create clear intent and installation drawings with the use of location diagrams and plans, elevations, sections, detail drawings, renderings, written specifications, message schedules, etc.
  • Develop accurate and detailed production files and manage quality control throughout the production and fabrication process through shop drawing review, site verification, production file proofing, RFI review and response, and punch lists.

  • Strong ability to design in three-dimensional space with an excellent understanding of scale and dimension.
  • Ability to translate design thinking into both two- and three-dimensional forms (sketches, elevations, renderings, etc.).
  • Ability to develop effective wayfinding strategies with a clear understanding of audience, flow, directional decision making, messaging and nomenclature, spatial hierarchy, etc.
  • Ability to develop clear, concise and effective location plans and message schedules while also remaining consistent with nomenclature and strategy.
  • Ability to develop ADA compliant interior signage systems with a knack for creating aesthetically pleasing and integrated design solutions.
  • Knowledge of visual legibility standards, evidence-based design research, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of standard interior and exterior signage production and fabrication methods, and strong ability to create detailed intent drawings with clearly written and appropriate specifications.
  • Knowledge of city, state and federal building and safety codes with an ability to work with necessary sources to ensure compliance.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), SketchUp, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel.
  • Revit, AutoCad, and Filemaker Pro, and CadTools a plus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, industrial design, interior design or similar.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience within the field of Signage & Wayfinding and/or Experiential Graphic Design.
