Viterbi School of Engineering is Hiring a Distance Education Operations Engineer I Near Los Angeles, CA

DEN@Viterbi (DEN) is the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s graduate online engineering program that supports more than 40 master’s degrees and noncredit programs in a hybrid model, supporting faculty and students in the classroom and students online. DEN’s infrastructure consists of 20 hybrid classrooms and learning environments including learning management systems, lecture recording, database systems, and staff in areas of classroom operations, instructional services, technical support, systems administration, software programming, and advisement services. 

The Distance Education Operations Engineer I maintains, operates, upgrades, and services the DEN@Viterbi instructional facilities. This position provides direct maintenance support for instructional hybrid classrooms, control rooms, portable audio/video systems, and capture and delivery systems related to e-Learning Systems and digital broadcast and monitoring systems. This position helps with researching classroom technologies, classroom installations, and support of all identified equipment in these facilities.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintains, operates, upgrades, and services instructional classroom equipment, audio-visual systems related to capture and delivery for e-Learning Systems and services, and interactive technologies (e.g., portable systems, computer equipment, teleconferencing equipment, instructional classroom equipment, television broadcasting, and digital broadcasting).

  • Coordinates set-up and maintenance of portable systems, including instructional classroom equipment and audio-visual systems related to capture and delivery for e-Learning Systems.

  • Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions. Ensures correct adjustments and operation of classroom equipment and webcast computer equipment including network quality. Conducts preventive maintenance of instructional equipment. Arranges for vendor repairs, adjustments or returns, as needed.

  • Assists faculty, staff, and students with problems and training with the e-learning equipment, specialized equipment, and applications.

  • Establishes and maintains software, documentation libraries, and inventories.

  • Assists in the development of user procedures and security procedures.

  • Stays informed of new technologies and hardware to improve quality of distance education operations. May make recommendations as appropriate.

  • Gathers financial data in a limited area, such as materials and supplies, as requested.

  • Job duties may be added or modified as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have experience with AV systems design, construction, and maintenance for hybrid classrooms including conferencing systems, video capture and transmissions, and AV integration for classrooms. Additional experiences with the maintenance, modification, troubleshooting, repair, and operation of audio-visual systems related to broadcasting technologies is helpful. Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and architectural blueprints. Experience working with control systems such as AMX NetLinx Studio (e.g. commissioning, testing connectivity, and device communication). Experience configuring digital signal processors such as Biamp.

Experience with the maintenance, modification and operation of instructional classroom equipment, audio-visual systems related to capture and delivery for e-Learning Systems and interactive technologies. Experience with capturing and delivering e-Learning Systems (via web and other electronic formats) and providing interactive conferencing set-up and support (web, phone, and audio/visual conferencing). Knowledge of support of instructional operations and technologies inside studio classrooms, such as computers, electronic

boards, and other interactive conferencing technologies. Knowledge of computing environments and specific support for e-Learning hardware and software. Knowledge of microsoft Windows Media technology and Real Networks streaming services essential. TCIP/IP based networking and computer support and troubleshooting experience. Knowledge of networks and digitizing process.

Additional Information:

This is an onsite position at USC’s University Park Campus located in Los Angeles, California. This position is not eligible for remote work. The Distance Education Operations Engineer I position will be expected to work onsite for 5 days ONSITE per week to focus on the evening class shift from 7am-3pm.

The hourly rate range for this position is $34.69 - $40.72.
