Vista Center for the Blind is Hiring an Orientation and Mobility Specialist Near San Jose, CA

Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired specializes in providing services for clients who are blind and low vision throughout California. Our Orientation and Mobility Specialists have schedule flexibility, low caseloads, and administration support who specialize in vision loss and understand the many demands of teaching. Working for Vista Center is unique because our instructors are never case managers and have the full support of a 360 vision team, including social workers, peer O&Ms, OTs, optometrists, and more!

We are looking to fill one full time position based in Santa Clara County serving adults with vision loss ages 18 - 100. This position has the option of working as a full time employee, part time, or contractor depending on your work availability. Teacher must have a certification in Orientation and Mobility and be comfortable working with adults and seniors. This position requires driving throughout Santa Clara County to our client homes. Our Mission: Vista Center empowers individuals who are blind or visually impaired to embrace life to the fullest through evaluation, counseling, education and training.

Orientation and Mobility Specialists work with clients in the home and community environment teaching special skills regarding safe travel. Other responsibilities include developing personalized goals and reports, ordering materials, and collaborating with other professionals to design and implement interventions appropriate to a client's unique needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct and consultative instruction for adults with visual impairments
  • Provide education and support to families and caregivers
  • Create and implement client goals for independence
  • Maintain data collection and records
  • Communicate and collaborate with supporting family members and caregivers

Requirements:

  • Hold current teaching certification for O&M
  • Experience working with seniors with disabilities and/or vision loss
  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal
  • Able to work with a group of professionals and coordinate multiple schedules
  • Able to transport between multiple work-sites on a daily basis
  • Able to establish rapport and maintain effective relationships with clients
