Summary:
Maintains knowledge of the overall characteristics of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, and has the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distributions and dose calculations in collaboration with the Medical Physicist and radiation oncologist.
Position Responsibilities:
• Designs treatment plans that will deliver the prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique in accordance with the radiation oncologist’s prescription to a defined tumor volume. Considers dose-limiting structures in the design of treatment plans and documents dose in accordance with the prescription.
• Performs calculations according to the physician’s prescribed dose and documents all pertinent information in the patient record, and verifies the mathematical accuracy of all calculations under the direction of the Medical Physicist.
• Assists the radiation oncologist by determining optimum treatment fields to accommodate volumes utilizing knowledge of field shape, gantry angulation, blocking, MLC, IMRT, and computerized dosimetry.
• Provides technical support to the Medical Physicist in radiation protection, qualitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance.
• Supports the technical staff in the implementation of the treatment plan, i.e., correct use of the immobilization device, compensators, wedges, field arrangements, and other parameters.
• Maintains an extended knowledge of the practices, methods, techniques, and new developments in radiation oncology treatment planning. Participates in continuing education in the area of current treatment planning techniques, and advances in medical dosimetry.
• Works with the radiation oncologist, simulation therapist, and medical physicist as a team approach to treatment planning.
• Supports and/or assists in planning of the fabrication of compensation filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices. Produces block shapes to design for multi-leaved collimator.
• Ensures that the treatment plan is approved by the physician prior to the first treatment. Transfers patient treatment data into Mosaic and verifies its accuracy.
