Job Description

The Controller's Office provides financial solutions to a comprehensive research institution operating in a complex and highly regulated environment. With a strong focus on technology, efficiency, and collaboration, this Finance division helps lead the continued evolution of administrative operations that best support Virginia Tech's world-class faculty, researchers, and students.

The Director of Tax at Virginia Tech plays a critical role in overseeing and managing the university's domestic and foreign tax compliance and strategic tax planning initiatives. This leadership position requires a highly skilled and experienced tax professional capable of navigating complex tax regulations both within the United States and internationally, optimizing the institution's tax position, and ensuring compliance with all applicable tax laws.
Reporting directly to the Associate Controller of Accounting Operations, the Director of Tax collaborates with various departments and stakeholders to ensure tax compliance, minimize tax liabilities, and contribute to the university's overall financial success.
Key responsibilities include:
Evaluate tax strategies and develop policies to ensure compliance with federal, state and local tax laws and regulations.
Collaborate with the finance teams and other university stakeholders to develop tax-efficient strategies that align with the university's financial goals and long-term plans including domestic and nonresident employment and unrelated business income tax.
Review various contracts and agreements with tax implications such as partnerships, collaborations, and vendor contracts, to ensure tax considerations are addressed and appropriately protect the university's position.
Provide training and educational sessions to university employees to enhance understanding of tax related matters, in both domestic and foreign contexts to promote university compliance.
Liaise with external auditors, tax authorities, tax consultants, and legal counsel in both domestic and foreign jurisdictions on tax-related matters, including audits and inquiries.

Required Qualifications

* Master's degree in taxation, finance, accounting, or a Bachelor's degree in related field with significant experience.
* Knowledge of both domestic and international tax matters.
* Knowledge of employment tax laws within the United States, as well as internationally.
* Demonstrated experience fostering collaborative working relationships.
* Experience in tax reporting and compliance.
* Strong analytical skills to interpret complex tax legislation and apply it to university business operations.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and make data-driven decisions.
* Excellent communication and presentation abilities, with the capacity to convey complex tax concepts to non-specialists.
* Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

* Juris Doctor, LLM, MSL.
* Professional licenses such as CPA or CIA.
* Knowledge or experience in a higher education or non-profit setting with global initiatives.
* Experience in managing tax audits and working with tax authorities.
* Research and interpret global tax considerations impacting university strategy.
* Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
