Job Description

The Assistant Director for the Black Cultural Center (BCC), which is part of the Cultural and Community Centers (CCCs) within the Office for Inclusion and Diversity (OID) reports directly to the Director of the BCC and is under the supervision of the Associate Vice Provost for Inclusion and Diversity. The Assistant Director will serve as a member of the OID team, support the Director of the BCC, advocate for students within the community, enhance student engagement, and collaborate with the Director, other CCCs, and campus partners.
The Assistant Director will help to organize, plan and coordinate BCC programming and services that facilitate the personal, social, academic, and cultural well-being of students, faculty, and staff at Virginia Tech. They will work with and help to supervise/direct BCC program assistants (student interns) as well as work to help support CCC collaboration, working directly with other CCC assistant directors.
This position will have primary responsibility for coordinating Martin Luther King Commemoration events, gathering information about events sponsored by campus partners as well as providing logistical support for the keynote event as planned by the commemoration committee. The Assistant Director will be responsible for managing administrative details associated with BCC programming, including food orders and supply requests, and submitting appropriate information to the CCC Program Manager for timely processing.
This position will be required to conduct outreach and play a key role with advocacy for the Black community. While much of this position is student-facing and interacting with undergraduate and graduate students, the Assistant Director may also, from time-to time, be asked to participate in faculty, alumni, and community engagement. This position will also help with assessment of key programs and events offered by the BCC.

Required Qualifications

* Master's degree in Higher Education, African American Studies, Social Justice Education, Sociology, Counseling, Ethnic Studies or a related field
* Experience developing, conducting, and evaluating comprehensive education programs and events;
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with the Black community and fostering awareness and support of intersecting identities;
* Demonstrated cultural competence and knowledge of diversity and inclusion issues and trends in higher education;
* Effective communication/presentation skills and the ability to facilitate group discussions;
* Experience in developing learning outcomes and assessment protocols;
* Demonstrated commitment to community building and collaborative relationships;
* Ability to solve problems effectively and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
* Ability to work in a team environment and take initiative to work on individual projects
* Experience working with college students

* Previous experience with campus-wide diversity trainings or educational spaces
* Experience working in higher education and with student organizations
