Virginia Commonwealth University Health System is Hiring a Sr Director Clinical Research & Quality Assurance Near Richmond, VA

Reporting to the Deputy Director Massey Cancer Center/SVP of VCU Health System Cancer Clinical Service Line, this position will work closely with the CSL Leadership and the Associate Director for Clinical Research, Medical Director of the Clinical Trials Office (CTO), the Executive Director for Clinical and Translational Research, and the Senior Director of Clinical Research Operations & Management. This position is an advocate to provide support for clinical research and to ensure efficient coordination of patient-centered quality care. This position provides constructive and forward-thinking administrative leadership for theVCUMassey Comprehensive Cancer Center (Massey)Cancer Service Line (CSL) promoting clinical research and quality cancer care within each of the CSL Tumor Programs. This position will support the CSL team efforts to effectively communicate with Massey's senior leadership, investigators, and research staff and in a highly collaborative and matrix environment. This position drives performance improvement and performance management initiatives for the Tumor Programs with emphasis on the areas of Multidisciplinary Clinics and Tumor Boards. This position works across the organization and will be responsible for promoting a customer friendly environment and providing superior service to our patients, clinical and research staff as well as other stakeholders in the VCU Health System and the VCU School of Medicine.

Essential Job Statements

Leadership:

  • Serves as a subject matter expert for quality cancer care treatment and outcomes with a focus on adherence to evidence-based treatment guidelines and best practices in clinical research.

  • Collaborates with the CSL Leadership, the Executive Director of Clinical and Translational Research, and the Senior Director of Clinical Research Operations & Management for the development and operational implementation of quality measurements including identification of gaps in care, monitoring equitable cancer care, and promoting clinical trials in the CSL.

  • Facilitates preparation, collaboration, planning, communication and support to promote the patient experience and communication through patient-centeredness of cancer care and growth in clinical research.

  • Communicates a compelling vision for achieving quality cancer care including efforts to facilitate clinical research within the CSL.

  • Understands and passionately advocates for compliance to institutional and external regulations.

  • Demonstrates ability to work independently as well as ability to lead the development and continual evaluation of the Multidisciplinary Clinic teams in a complex matrix environment.

Business Operations:

  • Establishes a supporting CSL structure for coordination of patient safety and effectiveness of care during standard of care treatment and treatment on clinical trials.

  • Leads teams to review and institute action for improvement in targeted treatment planning and in clinical trial enrollment to ensure clinical throughput is commiserate with growth strategies.

  • Works closely with the CSL regarding quality accreditation programs to include but not limited to the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) Commission on Cancer (CoC), ASCO Certified (Patient-Centered Cancer Care Standards), and other medical home and value-based programs.

  • Collaborates with the SVP of VCU Health System Cancer Service Line, Executive Director of Clinical and Translational Research and the Senior Director of Clinical Research Operations & Management to develop and implement evaluative metrics, reports, and dashboards to monitor outcomes in cancer early detection and screening, diagnosis and staging, healthcare disparities, and accrual to clinical trials.

Strategy:

  • Maintains content knowledge of changing patterns of care/technology that influence quality outcomes and clinical research strategies.

  • Coordinates with the CSL Operations and Nursing teams to initiate infusions for clinical trials in the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) for Phase 1 patients and assisting in the development of an ambulatory Phase 1 Center within Infusion Services.

  • Participates in strategic planning initiatives, contributing relevant data and insights to discussions for quality care improvement and clinical research implementation in the CSL.

Team Building:

  • Creates a high-performing matrix team with the clinical and non-clinical staff as evidenced by retention of team members and excellent employee engagement.

  • Maintains structured communication strategies to engage inpatient and ambulatory leadership, staff and community in support of Massey cancer treatment quality and outcomes, as appropriate, with a focus on clinical trials.

  • Conducts regular meetings with CSL managers and leaders, ensuring communication is shared, and staff are informed of key messages and changes.

  • Celebrates successes and develops staff towards continuous improvement.

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to achieve successful outcomes in both standard of care and clinical research initiatives.

Project Management:

  • Effectively manages projects assigned, identifying scope, timelines, resources required, scheduling and team management towards desired outcomes.

  • Ensures stakeholder inclusion and communication of action items/outcomes.

  • Participates in broader organizational project management as appropriate for the CSL.

  • Highly collaborative management style and skills including ability to collaborate with and build/maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders across functions, to optimize performance and drive projects to completion.

  • Excellent meeting management, group facilitation, and presentation skills.

Patient Population

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.

Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Employment Qualifications

Education Qualifications

Required Education:

BA/BS degree

Preferred Education:

RN, PharmD, or other clinical-relevant area, including, Master's in Management and Health Care Administration

Licensure/Certification Required:N/A

Licensure/Certification Preferred:

Professional certification in quality assurance through the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) or comparable certifications in compliance or quality improvement, clinical research management or research administration desired such asCCRP (SOCRA),ACRP, or equivalent credentials.

ONScertification highly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience:

Extensive (10 years or more) of progressively responsible experience in quality initiatives in health care and/or clinical research including a minimum of five years oncology experience in anNCI-designated cancer center or equivalent complex academic/research environment at a manager or director level position.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Knowledge of the ACOS Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards and knowledge of NCI Clinical Trials Network sponsored research as well as investigator-initiated and industry-initiated clinical research strongly preferred. Specialized knowledge of the unique needs of patients undergoing cancer treatment, including those participating in clinical trials strongly preferred.

Cultural Responsiveness

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

Proficient in all MS Office applications and clinical trials management systems (CTMS), preferably OnCore.

Experience with CTMS and Epic integration ideal.

Working Conditions
