VILLAGE OF TEQUESTA is Hiring a Lead Service Technician Near Tequesta, FL

INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY

Job Description

This is a hands-on position, carrying out specialized work in the operations, maintenance and repair of water and stormwater utility systems while leading and scheduling the daily work of crewmembers and maintaining a safe working environment. This position often works adjacent to, and in the same capacity as those supervised.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Two (2) years of water/stormwater utilities experience
  • FDEP Water Distribution System Operator Level 3; Level 2 preferred or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment
  • Stormwater Management Level C training or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment
  • Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester and Repair Certification or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment
  • Trenching and Excavation Competent Person Certification or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment
  • Vocational/technical training in heavy equipment operation and maintenance preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
  • Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification preferred or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment

 Necessary Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated skills in meeting deadlines and work compliance requirements
  • Some experience with computers and other office equipment and willingness and ability to increase knowledge and skills
  • Basic competence with reading and understanding utilities system drawings (blueprints), maps, schematics, atlases, and other technical documents
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the area of assignment
  • Sound knowledge of the hazardous areas in which employees may work, and the necessary safety precautions
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, to understand and carry out written and oral instructions, and print legibly
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in water and stormwater utilities repairs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of water and stormwater utilities construction techniques

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Assists with scheduling work of crews and participates in the completion of assigned duties with crews
  • Creates and completes work orders utilizing the Village work order system
  • Ensures compliance with established Village and regulatory policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Provides training, guidance, and assistance to crew(s), monitors status of work, inspects completed work, and troubleshoots problem situations as assigned
  • Operates and leads operation of various heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, backhoes, loaders, excavators, dump trucks, skid steer loaders, bucket trucks, valve exercisers, and bush hogs
  • Operates and leads operation of various power tools, machinery, and hand tools including but not limited to street saws, grinders, drills, pumps, plate compactors, mowers, weed eaters, ladders, wrenches, screwdrivers, shovels, and valve keys
  • Performs maintenance and repair work to water main lines/valves, stormwater lines, water service lines, fire hydrants and backflow prevention assemblies
  • Installs/replaces water meters and related parts
  • Reviews and ensures compliance with the work performed by utilities contractors as directed and as assigned
  • Restores and replaces landscaping, sidewalks, and asphalt after completion of repairs and leads as needed or assigned
  • Required to work standby and overtime as needed
  • Follows established policy for boil water notices, determines affected area, and arranges notification to the public using Village protocols, including delivery of door hangers
  • Manages and determines the most effective way to organize and set up equipment in traffic areas for the safe flow of traffic (MOT methods) as assigned
  • Performs and leads in general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include monitoring and inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment and cleaning shop/work areas; reporting faulty equipment
  • Champions and follows Village and department safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environments to ensure safety of employees and public
  • Assists/ leads in determining materials quantities to complete projects; ensures availability of adequate equipment, tools, parts, supplies, or other materials needed to conduct projects; initiates requests for new/replacement materials; purchases or picks up supplies/materials as assigned
  • Prepares and completes various forms, reports, correspondence, checklists, work orders or other applicable documents on paper or in a digital format as assigned
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, maps, policies, procedures, operational guides, manuals, reference materials, or other documents, and reviews, completes, processes, forwards, makes recommendations, and/or retains as appropriate
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, community services workers, other departments, contractors, community organizations, the public, and other individuals to coordinate work activities, review work status, exchange information, or resolve problems and follows up on inquiries and concerns as necessary and assigned
  • Reads and interprets utilities system drawings (blueprints), maps, schematics, atlases, and other technical documents, and coaches team as needed.
  • Provides as built corrections as needed to update the system, either marked on atlases or digitally as assigned, and coaches others in the process and importance of accurate asbuilts
  • May assist the foreman or superintendent with the manager’s monthly report and other performance metrics collected to ensure adequate resources are maintained for proper operation of the division, particularly preventive maintenance
  • May perform observations or inspections of various utilities’ construction activities as needed
  • Assists other employees or departments as needed
  • Performs other related duties and assumes other responsibilities as necessary or delegated

  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds or more with assistive equipment
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to vibration and above-normal noise levels
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals
  • Occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock
