The Village of Rantoul is now accepting applications for full-time Police Officers.
Under general supervision, our Officer will be responsible for performing a variety of duties related to the protection of life and property, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, preservation of the public peace, and the apprehension of violators of the law. Job Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the accomplishment of the police mission. The Officer shall constantly be alert for violations of the law and shall make every effort to prevent breaches of the peace and offenses against persons and property. The Officer shall be held accountable for crime, accident, disorders and other criminal conditions that come or should come to the attention of the Officer.
  • Patrol assigned areas by foot or vehicle, serving as a visible deterrent to crime and remaining alert to special problems in regard to crime prevention and possible criminal activities; checks business establishments, dwellings and other buildings for signs of illegal entries; provides information and assistance to the general public and investigates suspicious activities or situations.
  • Enforce Village traffic ordinances; regulates traffic, promotes traffic safety, performs speed control activities and issues citations to the violators of Illinois Motor Vehicle Code; provides motorist assistance.
  • Respond to radio dispatched calls for service and/or assistance, analyzes the situation, and takes appropriate action; assists other local law enforcement agencies, fire departments and emergency medical units during emergency situations.
  • Process crime scenes in accordance with standard procedures; identifies, gathers and transfers physical evidence to the Police Station; conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of reported and/or observed criminal activities; calls in Investigator for major criminal investigations.
  • Conduct preliminary investigation of all crimes. At the scene of a crime, subject to direction of higher Department authority, the first officer at the scene, when able to safely do so, and unless otherwise directed by the Shift Commander, will begin the preliminary investigation.
  • Investigate calls of a non-criminal nature to include lock outs, disturbances, family disputes, disabled vehicles, possible health code violations and other requests for service; assess individual case to determine appropriate action.
  • Apprehend suspects and makes arrest; transports arrested persons to police holding facility for booking and temporary incarceration; performs booking of suspects according to established procedures; transports prisoners to and from county jail facility as required.
  • Prepare written reports describing complaints, incidents and other police activities, and the observations and actions taken during incident investigation; provides relevant testimony in court as required.
  • Observe and reports damaged water lines, gas mains or sewers; all defective street/traffic lights; defective traffic signs, and utility lines that are in need of repair. Any defect of public service installations or any dangerous conditions of streets, sidewalks, village property or other property likely to prove dangerous to the public shall be immediately reported to a superior.
  • May be assigned to special duties such as Firearms Instructor, Field Training Officer, METRO SWAT operator, METRO Negotiator, Bicycle Officer, K-9 Officer, Breathalyzer Operator, and crime prevention and safety activities; receives ongoing training in specialized areas of assignment.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above Requirements

  • Knowledge of Illinois Criminal Statutes, Illinois Vehicle Code, local ordinances, and civil law related to the police mission
  • Knowledge of Village of Rantoul geography
  • Knowledge of Police Department policies
  • Knowledge of modern approved principles, practices, and procedures of police work
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to verbally communicate effectively during normal conditions and stressful and emergency circumstances
  • Ability to operate a vehicle in a safe manner during normal conditions and stressful and emergency circumstances
  • Ability to develop skill in the use of firearms and other defensive tactics (weapons and unarmed)
  • Ability to enforce laws, ordinances, rules and regulations with tact, impartiality, and firmness
  • Ability to mentally and physically react effectively, quickly, calmly, and rationally during times of conflict and emergencies
  • Ability to gather information and prepare complete, concise and accurate reports

  • Daily work is directly supervised by supervisory officers
  • Guidelines for work are provided and include assignments and general and specific instructions received by superior officers who review work methods and results through reports, personal inspections, and discussions

  • Work normally consists of routine patrol, preliminary investigation and traffic regulation duties
  • Work involves dealing with a variety of persons and situations with unusual circumstances and thus requires a need for flexibility and effective problematic decision making under pressure

  • Purpose of this position is the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, general enforcement of state laws and Village ordinances, and service to the community
  • Activities of this position affect not only the Police Department, but the community as a whole

Environmental Demands
Physical Requirements
  • Good physical condition as occasional physical exertion is intensive and demanding. Ability to perform defensive tactics necessary
  • Work hours may exceed eight hour days or forty hour weeks
Work Environment
  • There is always a risk of personal danger and harm
  • Much of the work is done in the field
  • Sometimes there is discomfort in working in all kinds of weather at all hours in very dangerous and adverse conditions and circumstances
  • Selected applicant will be required to live within a twenty mile radius of the corporate limits of Rantoul within six months after the completion of probationary period Qualifications
Education / Experience - * Must be at least 21 of age
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation
  • Must successfully complete a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation
  • Must complete a written entrance examination and pass an oral interview
  • Applicant will be required to pass a physical agility test to successfully complete the police training academy Perks

Starting pay for Patrol Officer is $33.66 per hour as of May 1, 2023.
