Flood Damage Repair Coordinator - Montpelier Park/VHCB
Join the Montpelier Parks & Trees crew for a summer of working on trails! Last July’s floods devastated our trail system, but also opened up an opportunity for us to make our Parks system more resilient to climate change and future flood events. We’ll spend the summer fixing the damage done by the floods, and upgrading our trails to prevent future damage. Part of the service term will be spent with our small Parks crew, and a part of it will be spent leading high school-age trail crew members in our flagship program, the Montpelier Youth Conservation Corps.
This position is part of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board AmeriCorps (VHCB AmeriCorps). The VHCB AmeriCorps program supports the innovative dual-goal approach to creating stable affordable housing opportunities for Vermont residents while preserving the natural and working landscape. VHCB AmeriCorps is a national service program that places members with non-profit housing or land and energy conservation organizations around the state.
The goal of this position is to re-build and upgrade trail facilities that were damaged in last July’s flooding. This will be accomplished by small crews spending the day on trails throughout Montpelier’s park system. In the beginning, you will serve alongside our small year-round staff team to gain the necessary skills to understand trail work concepts, and learn the goals of each project. The service member will be trained in professional trail building skills, and then will be expected to lead crews with assistance as needed throughout the field season.
