Job Description The day-to-day responsibilities of a DHR/EEO Law Student Intern would be to conduct intakes of potential complainants, update and maintain our case management system for assigned cases, interview employees in pending matters, review and analyze documentary evidence, and draft documents for pending matters such as interview questions, document requests, and investigation reports. The DHR/EEO Law Student Intern position will provide valuable real-world experience in conducting fact findings and report writing in cases involving discrimination and harassment. The skills learned in this position are transferable to litigation settings should the successful candidate decide to practice law. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Performs assigned duties specific to the operational needs of the Diversity and EEO Division
Responds within 24 hours to complaints made via telephone, walk-in, or via email involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation and/or violence in the workplace.
Conducts violence in the workplace investigations, including preparing investigation reports for the manager to review and approve. Prepares and maintains a folder of all case related documents in a format that facilitates legal review.
Assists EEO Investigators with typing during employee interviews.
Drafts correspondence to employees informing parties of the outcome.
Research relevant policies, rules and laws (federal, state, local) that apply to cases under investigation.
Assists with document review.
Additional duties may be required for this position. Must be a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or law school OR a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited business or data processing/ information technology school. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale.
Students must maintain the required GPA throughout the duration of their employment / internship
Must be enrolled in school with a minimum of 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency) throughout the duration of internship, with the exception of academic breaks, i.e., summer
Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications -Word, Excel, and Power Point
NOTE: You must be enrolled in school (with the exception of academic breaks) throughout your internship if you are selected.
NOTE: Applicant must be able to live in the City of Chicago during internship.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
Law student in good academic standing at an ABA accredited school
Course work or seminars related to employment law (including harassment or discrimination)
Able to work an intensive internship during the current academic year.
Able to work 28 hours per week during the summer and 10-20 hours per week during the academic year.
Able to work year-round for the duration of the internship.
