Veterans Outreach Center is Hiring a Certified Peer Support Specialist Near Rochester, NY

Veterans Outreach Center is pleased to be hiring for our soon-to-be open Steve Preston Peer Connection Center. We are seeking evening and weekend NYS-certified Peer Support Specialists for the following shifts:

1-Full Time Tue-Sat 3p-11p

1-Part Time Fri-Mon 3p-11p (30 hours/wk)

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists clients in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy.
  • Provides role modeling to clients regarding their behavior and interactions with others.
  • Models effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Provides individual support to clients and facilitates conflict resolution if needed.
  • Facilitates various trainings, workshops, groups and activities for clients and families.
  • Effectively engages and communicates with other program staff to integrate client services.
  • Provides advocacy according to the clients’ needs.
  • Coordinates activities and maintains appropriate schedules for location.
  • Collaborates with community agencies to identify resources.
  • Provides information about community and natural supports.
  • Communicates concerns regarding client statements or behaviors to appropriate program staff.
  • Attends formal and informal training seminars relating to the position.
  • Participates in community activities as representative of Peer Support Services as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous military experience strongly preferred. Must be a certified NYS Peer Specialist or be able to obtain certification within the first month of employment.
  • HS diploma or higher level of education achieved along with one year of experience in peer support.
  • Able to work evenings until 11pm and weekend hours as well.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills; a willingness to be helpful, flexible, patient, and creative; and the ability to remain calm during crisis situations are required.
  • A nonjudgmental approach that reflects cultural competency and sensitivity to the unique needs and diverse experiences of the individuals served.
  • Must have organizational skills, be accountable, accurately collect and record data, write reports and maintain accurate and up-to-date client files.
  • Valid NY State driver’s license.
  • Strong ethical character with ability to abide by VOC values of Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence.
