Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Registered Nurse (RN)-Oncology Nursing Director Near Indianapolis, IN


The Oncology Nursing Director demonstrates leadership and is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations. Exemplifying the principals of High Reliability Organizations, he/she facilitates an interdisciplinary approach to ensure delivery of high quality, cost effective, and customer-focused healthcare, in service of U.S. military Veterans and in support of the mission, mission, and values of Veteran Health Indiana and the Veterans Health Administration.

Qualifications:

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
Certification (Oncology Certified Nurse) and/or Oncology Program Management
BSN Required, MSN Preferred

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse II -
    • A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR
    • ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR
    • a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR
    • a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III -
    • Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR
    • a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position are concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and may include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities:

Primary duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • The incumbent is responsible for the direct oversight and management of personnel assigned to the Outpatient Hematology/Oncology clinic, Infusion clinic, and Vascular Access Team. Additionally, the Nurse Manager has oversight over Phlebotomy (blood draw) with the assistance of a Supervisory Health Technician. This position is responsible for all aspects of daily clinic, infusion services operations, and assures provision of care to patients by utilizing the nursing processes and principles of continuous quality improvement in collaboration with members of the healthcare team. The Nurse Manager performs various duties to ensure that quality and regulatory requirements of the department are consistently achieved. This position collaborates with the Director of Oncology and interdisciplinary care teams in meeting the needs of staff and patients. The Hematology/Oncology Nurse Manager is responsible for outpatient infusion services including chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy infusions
  • The incumbent must be proficient in IV insertions for adults, PICC line and Port-a-Cath management, phlebotomy, blood transfusions, performing nursing H&P/assessment, communicating with ordering physicians and staff, etc. This position serves as a liaison between staff and outside departments/providers to ensure employee and patient needs are met. Applicant must possess a high degree of self-motivation and directional initiative with ability to function successfully independently.
  • The incumbent plays an integral role in orienting new Nurse Managers, as well as supporting and facilitating clinical experiences of student nurse trainees (whether paid SNT/VALOR students or WOC OAA clinical observers) and entry-to-practice Registered Nurses (in RNTTP/PBNR residency programs) to support RN recruitment, workforce sustainability initiatives, and to ensure a highly qualified and competent workforce throughout Veteran Health Indiana.
  • The incumbent is responsible for attending and adhering to Supervisor training, policies, and procedures related to personnel management, staffing, employee relations/labor relations, and HR Modernization. The incumbent is accountable for proactive initiation of appropriate personnel and recruitment actions, through Manager Self Service (MSS), HR·Smart (HRS), USA Staffing (USAS), LEAF CCU (PD/FS classification processes), ePerformance (ePerf), and other Human Resources Management systems in a timely manner, to ensure expeditious recruitment, screening, interview, and selection of top quality candidates to fill mission-critical vacancies and ensure a highly competent workforce throughout Veteran Health Indiana.
  • Accountable for reporting current and accurate accounting of personnel rosters and FTEEs for all direct-report positions under their purview. Supervisors and others responsible for assigning duties and responsibilities to positions are directly responsible for position management actions taken within their areas of jurisdiction.
  • Leading and organizing the delivery of services that assure continuity and peer accountability for practice.
  • Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work.
  • Facilitating recommendations for systems and/or resource changes that will serve to improve the work force and resource utilization.
  • Evaluating and updating staffing information and working collaboratively with others to assess variances and projected staffing and service needs.
  • Encouraging employee engagement in shared governance and nursing improvement initiatives and facilitates staffing/scheduling that promotes participation in committees, projects, and events.
  • Acquires knowledge and skills to maintain expertise in area of practice. Participates in educational activities to improve clinical knowledge and enhance role performance.
