Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Physician (Perioperative Staff Physician) Near Memphis, TN

This position functions as a Physician of a Perioperative Clinic who maintains professional, technical, and administrative knowledge, competencies, and skills to provide effective care and timely, quality, responses to patients' clinical needs and problems in both the clinic and operating room settings. The Physician of the Perioperative Clinic will work under the supervision of the Section Chief of the Perioperative Clinic.

Qualifications:


To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as 'Physician Resident Providers' (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a 'scope of practice' that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: To perform in a fully successful manner, the individual must have the physical ability to perform job-related duties which may require light carrying (under 15 pounds), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (up to 1 hour), standing (up to 1 hour), and both legs required. In addition, there may be exposure to the following environmental factors: working inside and outside, working closely with others, and protracted or irregular hours of work. A health examination must be successfully completed prior to this assignment and periodically thereafter as required by the Occupational Health Clinic policy. There may be intermittent exposure to blood and body fluids.

Responsibilities:

NOTE - This position will be open until filled. Applications will be sent to the hiring manager every two weeks.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for the perioperative needs of outpatients cared for in the Perioperative Clinic.
  • Provides direct patient care in the perioperative clinic setting.
  • Responsible for providing the education and evaluation of medical students, residents, and other learners in the perioperative clinic.
  • Orders diagnostic tests and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions.
  • Provides the patient with a risk assessment of the proposed surgery and instructions on what medications to take and not take perioperatively.
  • Provides the surgeon and anesthesia specialist with instructions on thrombophlebitis prophylaxis, chronic disease management, obstructive sleep apnea management, the need for additional consultation, and any other information to enhance surgical outcomes.
  • Provides the primary care physician or nurse practitioner with any pertinent information discovered during the evaluation of a patient.
  • Assures prompt consultation to all surgical specialties needing perioperative assessment prior to surgery.
  • Provides or delegates prompt e-consultation for preoperative patients not requiring a clinic visit.
  • Responds promptly to MyHealthEVet requests from patients related to their perioperative clinic visits.
  • Processes all Perioperative Clinic consult requests in CPRS appropriately responding to
    the urgency of the request.
  • Provides all clinic staff physicians with patient and learner assignments for each half-day clinic.
  • Coordinates a proper patient mix of face-to-face, telehealth, and e-consult patient evaluations.
  • Manages care of patient between the time of consult and time of surgery to ensure optimal preoperative health. This includes the management of common medical problems and ordering rehabilitation as needed.
  • Addresses administrative duties as designated by the Chief of Surgery to include preventive medicine, emergency preparedness, and completion of all VA-required education including BLS and ACLS to ensure that all activities comply with all Joint Commission and medical center requirements.
  • Applies and maintains academic credentials permitting training of learners from different medical and associated health specialties.
  • Responsible for the development of clinical, educational, and research programs for the service in meeting measured performance objectives, cross-service coordination, and in affiliation with the University of Tennessee.
  • Ensures quality assurances related to the perioperative clinic and the delivery of health care by participating in service, care-line, and institutional peer reviews; gathering and responding to reports of contact, incident reports, signed statements, and customer
    service complaints; participates in root cause analysis.
  • Participates effectively in team meetings and various committees such as treatment planning conferences, education committees, and other required care-line and institutional assigned committees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff within clinical privileges to meet the needs of the organization.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. Rotational call and weekends may be required.
