Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Physician - Otolaryngology Near Pittsburgh, PA

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
  [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
  (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
  Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as 'Physician Resident Providers' (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a 'scope of practice' that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Board eligible or Board certified in otolaryngology with demonstration of past successful practice as otolaryngologist.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to perform the above listed duties which require general overall good health, ability to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity during community outreach including walking, carrying supplies and to safely lift up to 50 lbs. Requires travel throughout the medical center and the community. Requires performing activities involving sitting, walking, standing, bending and carrying such items as books, papers and files. Necessary to travel into the community where he/she conducts interviews with the Veterans, families, representatives of community health and welfare agencies and law enforcement agencies. Must possess a current driver's license and drive a government vehicle in carrying out professional duties.

Responsibilities:

Otolaryngology responsibilities include but not limited to:

• Admit patients with disorders of the head, ears, nose, sinuses, upper aerodigestive tract, pharynx, trachea-bronchial tree, neck, and skin of the head and neck to inpatient, same-day, observation, and other status as required for safe and effective evaluation and treatment of the above disorder.
• Order all procedures, tests, and consults required to evaluate, diagnose, and manage outpatients with disorders of the head, ears, nose, sinuses, upper aero-digestive tract, pharynx, trachea-bronchial tree, cranial nerves, neck, and skin of the head and neck.
• Perform all common in office ear procedures including cerumen removal, ear biopsies, myringotomy (with or without pressure equalizing tube insertion), paper patch tympanoplasties and insertion of external canal ear splints, medicines.
• Perform all procedures utilized for the routine examination of the head and neck to include skin examination, otoscopy and microscopic otoscopy, with cerumen removal and suction if required, anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy, with suction and palpation if required, examination of the oral cavity to include lips, teeth, gums, floor of mouth, tongue, buccal mucosa, oro-pharynx to include tonsils, soft palate, larynx and hypopharynx to include examination with mirror, telescope, or flexible fiber-optic or chip-tip instrumentation, with or without photographic documentation, palpation of normal and abnormal neck structures, palpation of the oral cavity, tongue, tongue, and oropharynx, as well as all other examination techniques not listed above. Administration of topical decongestant and anesthesia to facilitate the above routine examination procedures.
• Perform both external and internal nasal surgery to include septoplasty, rhinoplasty, turbinectomies, polypectomy, biopsies, and excision of masses and tumors.
• Perform in office head and neck procedures including fiberoptic laryngoscopy, tracheoscopy, bronchoscopy. Fine needle, true cut, incisional, and excisional biopsy of oral cavity, naso-, oro-, and hypopharynx. Administer topical anesthesia of upper aerodigestive tract.
• Perform in office nasal procedures such as nasal endoscopy, administrations of topical decongestant and anesthetic agents, manage anterior and posterior epistaxis, place and remove nasal packing, closed reduction of nasal fractures, removal of foreign body, biopsy.
• Perform in office skin surgery including biopsies, excisions, wound repair, suture removal, incision, and drainage.
• Provide Otolaryngology Consultation for eligible veteran patients when requested by providers who are privileged to request consultation.
• Perform pharyngeal surgery (endoscopic, trans-oral or trans-cervical) and laryngeal surgery to include repair of laryngeal fractures, vocal cord injections with temporary or permanent agents and/or autologous fat with harvest, laryngeal stenting, or laryngeal framework surgery, and all subtypes of laryngectomy both endoscopic and open.
• Supervise and instruct residents, medical students, fellows, nursing students and other trainees as well as independent and non-independent providers in the management of patients with disorders of the head, ears, nose, sinuses, upper aero-digestive tract, pharynx, tracheal-bronchial tree, neck, and skin of the head and neck.
