Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Intermittent Near Columbus, OH

This is an Intermittent / part-time position and not a full-time position.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/15/2024.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education:
    • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
      • The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), previously known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
      • OR
      • The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
    • OR
    • In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • AND
    • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The AANA has compiled current listings of approved training institutions, which are published annually in the December issue of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Journal. The American Hospital Association in their 'Guide to the Health Care Field' also publishes listings of approved training institutions annually in August.
  • Registration: A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The appointing official may waive this registration if the RN is to serve in a country other than the U.S. and the RN has registration in that country (e.g., Philippines). The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA.
  • Certification: On and after May 4, 1993, certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified nurse anesthetists employed by VA as a nurse anesthetist prior to May 4, 1993 and continuously thereafter. Any nurse anesthetist who leaves VA employment or vacates the nurse anesthetist occupation for another VA position, must meet the current requirement of certification for re-appointment as a nurse anesthetist. The CCNA and the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists have designated the AANA's web site as a display agent for their information. Nurse Anesthetists will maintain recertification by meeting the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetist's requirements as a condition of employment.
  • English Language Proficiency: RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
  • Recent Graduates: A graduate nurse anesthetist who has applied to take the national Certification Examination and has been declared Certification Eligible may be given a temporary appointment for a period not to exceed one year as a graduate nurse anesthetist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(a)(1)(D). The graduate nurse anesthetist must take the national Certification Examination at the earliest schedulable date following the date of their temporary appointment. At the time of appointment as a graduate nurse anesthetist, the Chief, Anesthesia Section or Service Chief/Product Line Manager will provide the graduate nurse anesthetist a copy of this section of the qualification standard and make clear the consequences for not becoming certified during the 1-year temporary appointment. Upon certification by the CCNA, the graduate nurse anesthetist will be converted to an appointment under 38 U.S.C. § 7401(1). Failure to become certified within the one year period will result in removal as a nurse anesthetist and may result in termination from employment.
  • Grandfather Provision: All nurse anesthetists employed in VHA on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. Nurse anesthetists who are grandfathered under the provisions of this subparagraph may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level (Nurse III), but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions.

Full Performance Level: (Nurse III)

Experience and Education. In addition to meeting the requirements for Entry Level, the CRNA has had progressively responsible experience in the administration of anesthetics as indicated in the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below. These individuals must demonstrate the ability to participate in a program for nurse anesthesia care and demonstrate knowledge of anesthetizing locations, methods, equipment and procedures. At this level, the CRNA has experience in the administration of anesthetics that has demonstrated the nurse anesthetist's ability to participate in team programs that are technically challenging and/or complicated. Typically candidates can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities of Full Performance Level within 2 years from entering the occupation.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity (including depth perception), keen hearing (aide permitted), clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity in both hands. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking (8 hours), standing (8 hours), stooping, sitting, bending, pulling (4 hours), and pushing (4 hours). lifting (>45 pounds), carrying (>45 pounds). Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. Must be able to work closely with others. Must be compliance with the use of ergonomic exercises and employee safety requirements.

Responsibilities:

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice nurse who utilizes.
specialized clinical skills and education to administer anesthesia care throughout the medical center. The
practice of nurse anesthesia is a recognized specialty within the profession of nursing. As independently
licensed health professionals, CRNAs are responsible and accountable for their practice. The scope of
practice includes direct patient care, administration, educational, and research activities.

CRNAs practice in collaboration with other health care professionals in a collegial relationship to achieve.
common goals for care, safety, and welfare of patients. In their position, CRNAs provide anesthetic.
services within four general categories:

Pre-anesthesia preparation and evaluation that included a patient history, physical examination, and the collection of preoperative consults and data, from which an anesthetic plan can be formulated. Patient assignments per the Chief of Anesthesia or another designated person. Anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emergence. Post anesthesia care Peri-anesthetic and clinical support functions outside the OR suite include post operative evaluations, responding to emergency situations, and facilitating care to meet the needs of service.

Duties are but not limited to:
  • Perform a pre-anesthetic patient assessment based on patient interview, patient history, lab results, and type of surgical procedure to be performed. Patient assignments per Chief of Surgery or another designed person.
  • Select and administer pre-anesthetic medication according to established protocol.
  • Request and evaluate pertinent laboratory studies, pulmonary function studies, including blood gases, respiratory therapy, and other appropriate studies under established protocol.
  • Insert intravenous catheters, according to established protocol.
  • Insert Swan-Ganz catheters and central venous pressure catheters under medical supervision.
  • Insert arterial catheters; perform puncture for blood gases.
  • Utilize all current techniques in monitoring.
  • Perform endotracheal intubation and extubating.
  • Select and administer anesthetic techniques (intravenous, regional, various field blocks, or inhalational), medications and adjunct drugs appropriate to the individual patient's condition and procedure (surgical or non-surgical) within established protocols in the operating suite and any off-site location (ie. Endoscopy, Radiology, Cardiology, MRI, etc.).
  • Manage fluid, blood and electrolyte therapy within a medical care plan.
  • Initiate and modify therapies, including drug and pain therapy within established protocols.
  • Examine patients in post-anesthesia recovery and other hospital units to assess patient's reaction to anesthetic management. Identify any complications or abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to adjunctive medication and implement appropriate management techniques.
  • Assist in the treatment and management of emergency airway problems as needed throughout the hospital. Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation by performing airway management.
  • including endotracheal intubations when necessary. Serve as code captain in the absence of a physician according to established protocols.
  • Provide anesthetic consultation to physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff as necessary.
  • Make post-operative rounds and record on the patient's permanent record the presence or absence of anesthesia-related-complications.
  • Take an active role through the attendance and participation in the departmental in-service program.
  • Responsible for patient care activities for adult and geriatric patients. Responsible for understanding the aging process and to modify treatment plans to accommodate the changes that occur with aging.
  • In the performance of official duties, the employee has regular access to printed and electronic files containing sensitive data which must be protected under the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations. VA statutes and policies. The employee is responsible for l) protecting data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion and 2) following applicable regulations and instruction regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc. as set out in a computer access agreement which the employee signs.
