Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist - Baltimore Near Baltimore, MD

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia education program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G7)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetist is a requirement for employment.
  • Nurse Anesthetists will maintain recertification by meeting the Council on Recertification of Nurse
Preferred Experience:
  • Master's Degree in Nurse Anesthesia; highly desired
  • Doctor in Nursing Practice (DNP); preferred
  • Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP); preferred


Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs.); Light lifting, under 15 pounds; Moderate carrying (15-44); Light carrying, under 15 pounds; Straight Pulling (1hour); Pushing (1-3 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (4 hours); Standing (2-7); Kneeling(2hours); Repeated bending(2hours); Climbing, use of legs and arms; Both Legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13' to 16' to Jaeger 1 to 4; specific visual requirement 20/40 DVA; corrected; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Sitting (8 hours per day); Simple Grasping (2-4 hours per day); Fine Manipulation (4-6 hours, includes keyboarding per day); Twisting (2 hours per day); Mental and Emotional Stability.

Responsibilities:

This is an open continuous posting. Eligible applicants will be reviewed and referred to the hiring manager 2 weeks from the opening date, and then again every 2 weeks until all positions have been filled.

The certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice nurse who utilizes specialized education and clinical nursing skills to administer anesthesia care throughout the medical center. The practice of nurse anesthesia is a recognized specialty within the profession of nursing. As an independently licensed health professional, the CRNA is responsible and accountable for his/her practice. The scope of practice includes direct patient care, administration, educational and research activities.

Major duties include, but are not limited to working with anesthesiologists, surgeons, other physicians and medical professionals to deliver anesthesia for medical and surgical procedures, providing direct care for patients before, during or after a medical procedure or surgery by performing patients' assessments; preparing patients for anesthesia, administering and maintaining anesthesia to ensure proper sedation and pain management, overseeing patient recovery from anesthesia and caring for patients' immediate post-operative needs.
