Description

Position: Internship: To start approximately after Memorial Day weekend in late May - Return to school semester. (Flexible)

Location: Supports both 531 West Poplar Avenue| Tipton | CA | 93272 and Visalia 12310 Avenue 368 | Visalia | CA | 93291

Hourly Rate: $18.00 hour

Shift: Days M- F


Job Summary

Responsible for handling various administrative and communication functions within the EHS Department. The EHS Intern will work closely with the EHS Generalists and EHS Manager to enhance and promote environment, health and safety initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Participate in weekly safety walks, perform EHS inspections and site audits under the guidance and direction of the EHS Manager and EHS Generalists.
  • Develop and lead at least one EHS training based on company needs at the time of the internship under the guidance and direction of the EHS Manager (i.e. Wildfire Smoke Standard, Emergency Response updates).
  • Develop working knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental, health and safety regulations and demonstrate that knowledge by supporting the Hazard Identification program. Work with management to develop corrective actions to mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Develop and complete an audit at both facilities focusing on the 10 most cited CAL OSHA regulations in 2022. Present findings to the plant management.
  • Provide support with the following EHS programs to ensure regulatory compliance and continuously improve performance: eyewash stations, Lockout Tagout (LOTO), confined space assessments, ergonomic assessments and developing JSAs for high-risk and non-routine tasks.
  • Develop three (3) EHS-related Weekly Safety Tailgates to be distributed to the plant personnel focusing on pertinent safety topics based on the needs of the plants (i.e. Heat Stress, Insect/wildlife safety, and forklift safety).
  • Complete at least 1 review of an existing EHS program ensuring program meets current CalOSHA standards. Update the program as necessary and provide training to affected employees.
  • Learn how to operate the Safety Management System and maintain EHS-related systems.
  • Follow all safety rules and practices to include the wearing of all essential personal protective equipment.
  • Follow all food safety and personal hygiene practices.
  • Perform other technical and general duties as required and requested in support of the EHS Department.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Degree in or working toward a degree in: Health/Health & Safety, Industrial, Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Sciences, Management, Occupational Safety or Industrial Engineering.
  • Requirements for Undergraduate Students: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university with at least 60 credit hours in good academic standing.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with intermediate to advanced knowledge of Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to read and interpret CalOSHA, OSHA and environmental regulations.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated individual who can work independently as well as work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish Preferred.

Physical Requirements

The working environment fluctuates between office and manufacturing. The EHS intern will be working on a computer up to 50% of each workday. The remaining portion of the time will be spent walking around the facility, talking with employees, reviewing equipment set-ups and auditing to assist the EHS Department. The ability to meet flexible and changing priorities and the ability to work under pressure is a must. Frequent transition between sitting, standing, and walking. Occasional climbing, kneeling, lifting, twisting and bending. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
