VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital is Hiring a Chief Medical Officer Near South Hill, VA

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Community Hospitals reports jointly to the Community Hospital President and to the Chief Medical Officer Ambulatory. The CMO is primarily responsible for leading and implementing the clinical direction of the community hospital and ambulatory care services and for providing clinical oversight to the integrated delivery of quality, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare services. The CMO works collaboratively with VCU Health department chairs, VCU Health Ambulatory division leadership and VCU Medical Education leadership to provide oversight of all practices and providers working in the community hospital region. With a focus on quality and safety, the CMO works closely with health system administration and leaders across the enterprise to continuously improve clinical operations ensuring patients receive equitable, high-quality, safe medical care.

The executive will develop and execute equitable initiatives to improve current services, along with the development of new services. As a key member of the health system leadership team, the CMO works directly in the development and implementation of the health system’s strategic plan. The CMO serves as a liaison to the medical staff and health system administration, and in collaboration with the larger team, creates an inclusive culture of respect, mutual support, and extraordinary quality and service consistent with the health system’s strategy, mission, and values.

The CMO fosters a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace, and ensures VCUHS entities in scope comply with both, VCU and VCUHS policies and procedures.

Education, Licensure, Training, Certification, and Other Requirements for Hire:

MD or DO degree

Current licensure or eligibility for licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine

Successful completion of an ACGME accredited residency training program

Eligibility for Community Hospital medical staff membership

Licensure, Certification, and Other Requirements for Continued Employment:

Current Licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine

Current member of the Community Hospital medical staff in good standing

Education/training Preferred for Hire:

Certified Physician Executive (CPE)

Master of Health Administration (MHA), Master of Business Administration (MBA) or similar graduate degrees.

Level and Type of Experience Required for Hire:

Five (5) years of medical experience (independent clinical practice)

Level and type of experience Preferred for Hire:

Medical leadership and management experience

Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing clinical quality, safety initiatives

  • Ability to balance the duties of a physician with that of an administrator.
  • Demonstrated ability to ensure patients receive the highest standard of equitable medical care.
  • Ability to improve clinical services and reduce health care disparities
  • Ability to mentor and recruit diverse physicians and foster a culture where they can thrive.
  • Ensure all healthcare regulations and safety standards are met.
  • Comprehensive understanding of all elements of equitable healthcare delivery, including strategy development, business planning, operations, and financial.
  • Demonstrated understanding of equitable patient and service area needs, as well as scope and level of care required by patients served.
  • Experience that demonstrates knowledge of quality infrastructure, including how to implement decision tools, clinical protocols and guidelines, and care management outcome assessment.
  • Ability to use objective and inclusive data to support position and change behavior.
  • Ability to act as a strong proponent for equitable clinical quality – inspires others to follow.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate new approaches to the medical staff.
  • Ability to articulate the clinical quality and regulatory implications of decisions, policies, or actions.

  • Ability to build a collaborative, equitable and inclusive quality-oriented environment with nursing and professional services leadership.
  • Ability to interact inclusively with the medical staff, while also being able to effectively articulate point of view.
