Position Overview

The Concrete Superintendent oversees on-site supervision of concrete construction projects, working with the project management team to develop site logistics and communications plans. This role includes inspecting concrete work for quality and compliance with project specifications, training staff, and ensuring adherence to safety and project procedures. The superintendent supervises construction workers, assistant superintendents, and trade contractors, ensuring project excellence.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a detailed site logistics plan focusing on concrete operations, including lifting, hoisting, deliveries, and site access to ensure efficient workflow and safety.
  • Conduct inspections of concrete construction activities to verify adherence to established quality standards and compliance with project plans, specifications, shop drawings, and related documents.
  • Enforce Vaughn’s safety program and OSHA regulations with a keen focus on concrete work environments to maintain a culture of safety and compliance.
  • Offer technical assistance for concrete construction methods and equipment, including interpretation of drawings and recommendations for best practices.
  • Proactively coordinate concrete trade installations, addressing potential sequencing, constructability, schedule, and spatial conflicts.
  • Assist with procurement of materials and equipment necessary to complete scope of work.
  • Review and analyze plans, specifications, and drawings before commencing activities to ensure preparedness and understanding.
  • Foster positive communication and teamwork within the project team and with QA/QC and safety coworkers, emphasizing collaboration in concrete construction processes.
  • Assist in the development and enforcement of project procedures and standards, focusing on concrete operations to enhance project quality and efficiency.
  • Promote a positive company culture and image, with a specific emphasis on excellence in concrete construction practices.
  • Train and mentor assistants and workers in concrete-specific policies/procedures, aiming to develop a skilled workforce committed to quality and safety.
  • Build professional relationships with clients and design teams, ensuring concrete aspects of the project meet expectations and contribute to project success.
  • Ensure all personnel on-site follow procedures related to concrete work, maintaining high standards of organization and project management to meet timelines.
  • Manage documentation related to concrete operations, including time sheets, daily reports, and labor projections, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Work closely with the project management team to maintain and update schedules for concrete installations, ensuring projects progress according to plan.
  • Maintain exemplary attendance and punctuality, setting a standard for commitment and reliability in overseeing concrete construction projects.

Education and Training:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a project superintendent, with significant experience in managing concrete operations for large-scale projects.
  • Preferably experienced in healthcare, higher education, and laboratory projects with a focus on concrete construction.
  • Demonstrated experience with self-performing work in foundations and cast in place concrete structures.
  • Proven track record of managing profitable projects and achieving labor cost savings in concrete work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in managing multiple aspects of concrete construction projects, balancing technical, personnel, and safety considerations effectively.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of concrete construction technology, methods, and safety practices.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and motivate teams in high-stakes concrete construction environments.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and planning skills, tailored to the complexities of concrete construction.
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office and project management software, facilitating effective management of concrete construction projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet or exceed project schedules, particularly in the execution of concrete work.
  • Skilled in supervising large groups of craft workers, ensuring high-quality concrete workmanship.
