PURPOSE OF JOB POSITION
The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing resources to the physician to provide excellent and efficient patient care. They are responsible for the delivery of patient care through the process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Such resources include the timely processing of clinic patients and the securing of all diagnostic and other related information required by the physician prior to the patient’s appointment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Listed below is an outline of the essential functions as well as the major duties, responsibilities and qualifications required to perform the essential functions of the position.
1. Insures that all incoming labs and diagnostic tests are reviewed as the information is received. Insures that all routine labs and test results are properly filed in the patient’s chart in a timely manner.
2. Insures that labs or diagnostic test results requiring clinical evaluation are presented to a physician in a timely manner.
3. Insures that all patient charts are prepared prior to outpatient clinic appointments including, but not limited to, lab values, diagnostic tests ordered, prior office notes, consults, and op notes. Insure all documentation is in computer on each patient, to include but not limited to, medicine list, ROS, diagnosis, social history, surgery history, and allergies.
4. Insure that all medicines are checked and vital signs documented on each patient prior to placing patient in room.
5. Insures that all prescription refills are properly and timely sent to the appropriate pharmacy.
6. Assist in scheduling any outpatient procedures being ordered by physician. Make sure to give patient all orders for procedures being scheduled.
7. Schedule follow-up appointments as directed by the physician. Provides educational material to patients as directed by the physician.
8. Answers telephones in a professional and courteous manner. Addresses the caller’s concerns or smoothly transfers the call to the appropriate individual.
9. Drives to various offices, trainings, special events and runs company errands as required.
10. Consistently models behaviors that demonstrate both understanding and support of the Corporate Philosophy
11. Attendance/Punctuality is within policy/standards.
12. Takes initiative & is accountable for work outcomes.
13. Follows supervisor’s instructions with enthusiasm.
14. Communicates positively & works well with others.
15. Follows company policies and safety regulations.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education:
a) Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
b) Must have completed medical assistant coursework from a credentialed institution.
c) Five years of medical assistant experience in an office setting may be substituted for the above.
2. Experience:
a) A minimum of three years’ experience in medical office as a medical assistant preferred.
3. Specific Requirements:
a) Must be able to read, write and speak the English language.
b) Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
c) Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/staff, payors and the general public.
d) Must possess the ability to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non-professional staff.
e) Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc.
f) Must be able to clearly communicate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other department supervisors.
g) Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle patients, staff, and visitors based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning.
h) Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
4. Physical Requirements:
a) Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
b) Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress of position.
c) Must be able to sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours.
d) Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position are fully met.
e) Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
f) Must be able to lift office supplies (e.g., boxes of copy paper).
g) Must have a valid drivers’ license and be insurable.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Works in well lighted/ventilated office area, as well as throughout the facility and its premises.
2. Subject to frequent interruptions.
3. Involved with patients, family members, staff members, visitors, government agencies/staff, payors, etc., under all conditions/circumstances.
4. Subject to hostile and emotionally upset staff members, patients, family members, visitors, etc.
5. Must be willing to work beyond normal working hours when circumstances warrant.
6. Attends and participates in continuing education programs designed to keep you abreast of changes in the profession.
7. Subject to falls and accidents from use of equipment, odors, etc. throughout the workday.
