Job Description
The Program Manager for Faculty Development is part of the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Education at Vanderbilt University and is a key contributor in carrying out the responsibilities of the office as they relate to supporting faculty by providing a holistic approach to faculty development. This includes developing and leading and managing the project lifecycle of specific programs within faculty development that inform larger campus initiatives; serving as the communication liaison in creating public content and managing internal and external communication; and managing the logistical work throughout the various projects within the faculty development portfolio. Reporting functionally to the Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs and Professional Education, the Program Manager will work with the University's leadership, faculty, and staff across the full range of the University's interests and activities, especially those related to faculty and leadership development and all aspects within the faculty development portfolio.
The Program Manager will play a key role in ensuring faculty development initiatives are launched successfully and provide a positive impact for all faculty. The Program Manager will build relationships; engage with changing technologies; communicate effectively, both orally and especially in writing; help support digital communication efforts through the web and social media; manage projects using project management tools; work independently; and organize and carry out confidential and complex tasks. The position will also provide special project support as needed to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Professional Education.
The Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Education in the Office of the Provost is led by the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Professional Education and oversees and promotes data-driven initiatives to improve faculty recruitment, development, promotion, and retention. Vanderbilt University has over 4,000 full-time faculty across ten schools and colleges. A principal responsibility of the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Education is to support faculty in their teaching, scholarship, and service by providing high caliber and research-based professional development resources. The Associate Provost for Faculty Development leads these efforts, ensuring a holistic approach to faculty development. This includes providing guidance, consultation, and leadership in general faculty development, which include various presentations, workshops, and events; academic leadership development; internal faculty awards; internal funding programs; faculty searches; and other initiatives that positively impact the faculty lifecycle and experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate multiple faculty development projects, ensuring efficient utilization of resources and adherence to timelines and budgets.
  • Manage the process for dean-level recruitment and search plans across the university with collaborative efforts in each school or college, while serving as the central point of contact for external search firms, the Office of the Provost, and the Office of the Chancellor.
  • Manage annual new faculty orientation including a one-day event featuring the Chancellor, Provost, and other university leaders and the year-long new faculty onboarding series.
  • Manage the process for internal faculty awards and recognition, as well as related events.
  • Serve as the office's representative on working groups and with other offices on faculty development projects.
  • Collaborate with OFAPE team members in developing onboarding and integration plans for new deans and academic leaders.
  • Support Associate Provost for Faculty Development across the faculty development portfolio.
  • Support the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Professional Education on special projects.
  • Utilize strong communication skills to liaise with faculty, staff, and stakeholders, maintaining transparency and ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
  • Develop detailed project plans to track progress and adjust as needed.
  • Apply proven project management methodologies and tools to ensure effective execution of projects.
  • Monitor project performance using appropriate systems, tools, and techniques.
  • Maintain and update the Office of Faculty Development's web presence.
  • Provide logistic and administrative support for various projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is required.
  • A Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is strongly preferred.
  • Three to five years related experience in higher education is required.
  • Experience with webpage editing and digital communication is required.
  • Experience using Office Productivity Tools and Project Management Software (e.g. Monday.com, Trello, Wrike, etc.) is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to maintain organization while prioritizing responsibilities and workflows is required.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a great team is required.
  • Familiarity and experience with project management is required.
