JOB SUMMARY
The School Resource Officer performs specialized law enforcement work assigned to elementary, middle and high schools. The purpose of the school resource officer is to be a peace officer by maintaining order on campus with the legal authority to arrest if required. The SRO is a resource teacher in areas of law enforcement education and can play the role as counselor, by listening and assisting students, faculty and staff with various problems. The SRO is responsible for diverting minor law infractions through school disciplinary avenues and parent counseling. The position develops various classroom presentations on a variety of subjects from substance abuse, youth and violence, motor vehicle law and safe driving, juvenile law etc., and works with faculty to address student classrooms when requested. Work also includes providing security at school events and providing traffic control on campus. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through observation, discussion, and review of reports for adherence to laws, department procedures, and proper judgement.
