Valparaiso University is Hiring a Weekend Circulation Manager (Library Supervisor) Near Valparaiso, IN

The Christopher Center is hiring a Weekend Circulation Manager (WCM) for the 2024-2025 academic year! The WCM is the only nonstudent staff member in the Library for much of the weekend. Using sound judgment, this person must address all problems, incidents, and emergencies that arise. The WCM is partially responsible for managing the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). In concert with the other three Circulation Managers, this manager provides the following: support services normally delivered at the Circulation and Media Desks (including collection management, equipment reservations, copy machine services, and routine shelving); supervision of circulation student assistants; and special projects as assigned. This is a limited part-time, academic year (August 17, 2024 through May 4, 2025) position scheduled for 14.25 hours per weekend. There is a potential for renewed employment in subsequent academic years. Graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Pay: $19/hour

Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 6:15 p.m.
Sunday 11:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

*The Library closes for winter break between the fall and spring semesters. During this and other
breaks when the Library is closed on weekends (such as spring break), this manager will not be
scheduled to work. To see typical weekends the Library is closed, past hours can be found

Major Responsibilities:

  • Open the building on Saturdays and Sundays 
  • Close and secure the building on Saturday nights
  • During weekends, manage the day-to-day activities of the Circulation and Media Desks
  • Share management of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) with the other Circulation Managers
  • Share supervision, training, and evaluation of departmental student assistants with the other Circulation Managers
  • Communicate with other Circulation Managers and solve routine problems associated with service activities. Communicate with Supervisor and colleagues as needed regarding non-routine or recurring problems.
  • Support patron access to collections and resources
  • Resolve customer service issues in a positive, productive manner
  • Function as the primary public contact person for all who use the Christopher Center building and resources on the weekends
  • Interact in proactive and productive ways with other campus support services, such as Information Technology, VUPD, Human Resources, and Student Affairs

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Some college education required
  • Three years of experience in positions with management and supervisory duties in a public setting
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact and communicate with clarity, discretion, and courtesy to supervisors, co-workers, the University community, and the
    public
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Problem solving, attention to detail, and good reasoning skills
  • Ability to make informed, on-the-spot decisions and flexibility for working in a collegial, team-based environment
  • Excellent computer skills (including familiarity with MS Office Suite)
  • Must be able to lift and shelve books. Position requires lifting, bending, and stooping

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

Other Qualifications:

  • Handling emergency situations directly affecting patrons and staff (i.e., medical, weather-related, building danger, etc.)
  • Maintaining uninterrupted library operations as much as possible during times of computer and other machine inoperability, especially during power outages
  • Handling occasional upset and stressed-out patrons in a calm manner
  • Dealing with student assistant absences and other issues related to relying on a primarily-student based front-line workforce
  • Keeping the various library collections in order and accessible
