Overview:

The Field Maintenance and Construction Worker III is a senior member of a crew, operating a full range of construction equipment such as cranes, skip loaders, small trenchers, forklifts, and trucks. They work on maintenance and construction projects in watershed areas for flood control and at water distribution facilities.
No two days or worksites are alike. Adaptability and flexibility regarding work assignments and the ability to get along well with a team are critical to success in this role. This position works outside and can sometimes be subjected to difficult environmental conditions such as cold, heat, or rain. There could be times when this position is called out at night to perform flood control during emergencies.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Operating a full range of construction equipment at the journey level, such as cranes, skip loaders, small trenchers, forklifts, and trucks.
  • Hauling equipment to and from job sites.
  • Inspecting equipment.
  • Constructing, maintaining, and repairing flood control and groundwater recharge facilities.
  • Maintaining dams, channels, roads, and right of way.
  • Setting up traffic control and directing traffic around work sites.
  • Operating and maintaining a variety of maintenance equipment, such as hand, air, and power tools, generators, compressors, and cement mixers.
  • Performing all duties of this progressive series including the duties of Maintenance Worker I and II.
  • Construct, maintain, and repair flood control and groundwater recharge facilities; patch cracks; build and remove small dams and lay riprap; perform concrete work; break and remove rubble, place forms, and install reinforcements; mix, pour, and finish cement.
  • Assist in trash and debris removal and graffiti abatement at locations such as work sites and homeless encampments.
  • Support the loading of sediment and the cleaning of groundwater recharge and sludge ponds; Count truck loads; complete truck tags; makes sure operators are properly loading trucks and perform traffic control.
  • Operate pumps, generators, and small equipment. Assist in performing preventive maintenance on pumps, valves, and other water distribution facilities; assist in various mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and painting work.
  • Maintain paper and electronic records of work performed.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in a timely manner.
  • Construct and repair fences.
  • Remove blockages and sediment and perform erosion repair in creeks; estimate and document the volume of obstructions that caused blockages.

Ideal Experience:
  • A minimum of five (5) years of construction or field maintenance experience including the operation of seated light construction equipment such as dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, and graders.
  • Must have a satisfactory driving record and possess a valid California Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement at the time of hire.
Ideal Skills and Abilities:
  • Operate a variety of seated light construction equipment such as dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, and graders.
  • Perform maintenance of hand and power equipment and tools.
  • Read and interpret maps, engineer drawings, and specifications.
  • Perform traffic control functions.
  • Perform a variety of preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Use common desktop applications and software.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports of work performed.
  • Operate a variety of maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ideal Knowledge:
  • Operational characteristics of maintenance, hand, and power equipment and tools.
  • Operational characteristics of construction materials and large tools such as jackhammers, compaction equipment, and air compressors.
  • Operational characteristics of seated light construction equipment (under 12,500 pounds) such as dump trucks, and front-end loaders.
  • Pertinent laws and regulations including state and local Department of Transportation codes relating to the operation and transport of light construction equipment.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Practices, procedures, methods, tools, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and flood control facilities.
  • Methods and techniques of concrete finishing.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Methods and techniques of construction maintenance.
Ideal Training and Education:
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Required License or Certificate
Must possess a satisfactory driving record and a valid Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement at the time of hire.

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.
This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.
