General Description:
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructor is responsible for providing basic instruction in reading, writing, and math, along with some general science and social studies content. The ABE Instructor may also supervise volunteer tutors. This position is funded by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and reports to the Director of Adult Education.
Specific Essential Duties:
· Prep for and teach 7 hours of basic reading, writing and math instruction to adults
· Plan classroom instruction aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards
· Conduct initial and on-going assessments of students
· Work with students to develop and implement participatory projects based on classroom and community issues
· Integrate digital literacy instruction into class instruction
· If assigned, work with and supervise classroom volunteers
· Work cooperatively with the Education and Career Advisor
· Record student attendance in the attendance tracker
· Submit class plans weekly or as required
· Participate in curriculum development
· Maintain and submit records and reports (such as recording attendance) as required under funding guidelines
· Work with Director on program development, community development and other projects
· Attend all staff meetings (and serve on staff committees, as needed)
· Maintain subject matter knowledge in accordance with Professional Standards for ABE Teachers
· Participate in professional development activities to deepen content knowledge and explore Adult Basic Education teaching strategies and ideas
· Other duties as required
General Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and minimum 1 year teaching experience. Knowledge of and experience with adult basic education. Familiarity with learner-centered teaching philosophy; experience facilitating and training groups; experience working with volunteers; experience working with diverse cultures and non-native speakers of English. Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong organizational and computer skills. Some travel in employee’s car is required; must have a valid Massachusetts driver's license. Ability to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations, where possible, may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.
Preferred: Master’s degree. Experience designing project-based lessons that integrate both classroom and online learning. Bilingual/bicultural Spanish/English helpful.
