Regulatory Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Eighty hours of training in the proper procedure to be employed in the performance of venipuncture and skin punctures under the supervision of the Chief Medical Technologist.
  • Phlebotomy certification required.

Job Summary: Performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements, assists in Clinical Laboratory as needed. Responsibilities include bleeding time tests, blood cultures, and blood samples.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

1. Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.

2. Records phlebotomy requisitions in logbook.

3. Identifies the patient - comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s identification band before venipuncture is performed.

4. Displays courteous, professional manner towards patients, co-workers, nursing and medical staff.

5. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

6. Labels and records all test tubes, logs procedures, files paperwork.

7. Is knowledgeable about which color top tube to use and the volume of blood needed - knows test requirements.

8. Follows Standard Precautions at all times.

9. Disposes all sharps in a rigid sharps container.

10. Cleans and supplies venipuncture trays. Maintains work areas. Orders supplies when needed.

11. Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties.

12. Completes duties in a time efficient manner, knows how to prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders and outpatients.

13. Seeks guidance and direction as necessary.

14. Demonstrates the value of team concept on a consistent basis.

15. Assists laboratory technician, does clerical work when needed.

16. Follows policies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory and the hospital.
