THE DIVISION
DCR's Soil and Water Conservation staff administers nonpoint source pollution control programs required by state law. They include nutrient management, agricultural best management practices, resource management planning, shoreline erosion advice, and the administrative, technical, and financial support of Virginia's 47 soil and water conservation districts.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Soil and Water Conservation, is seeking an individual to serve as an Agricultural Best Management Practice (BMP) Engineering Specialist. This position will provide technical assistance and support to Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs), perform design and construction inspections and create as-built drawings for agricultural BMPs, review designs by SWCD staff for compliance with USDA-National Resource Conservation Service standards and specifications, and perform other duties related to the District Engineering Services Program.

Minimum Qualifications

• Considerable experience with and knowledge of the application of engineering principles for site-specific water quality problems.
• Considerable demonstrated knowledge of construction and survey practices.
• Experience with water resources including stormwater, dams, agriculture, floodplain, best management practices for water quality, etc.
• Experience providing effective oral and written communications.
• Experience working without close supervision.

Additional Considerations

• Experience working with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) conservation practice standards and interacting with local, state, and federal officials.
• Experience working with agricultural producers to solve water quality problems related to agricultural activities.

Ability to travel daily with occasional overnight travel required.
