JOB TITLE: 

Laboratory Assistant, Senior - Molecular Biology 

JOB PURPOSE:

Perform technical laboratory and/or research tasks; conduct laboratory preparation and experiments under limited supervision; spearhead lab managerial and administrative duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lab-based duties

  • Assist with microinvertebrate animal culture
  • Assist with computer modeling, data representation, and graph design
  • Set up and organize laboratory and supply areas; some positions prepare culture media and reagents used in laboratory experiments or lecture demonstrations and assist with maintaining supplies and equipment.
  • May be responsible for, and supervise others for laboratory preparation, proper storage and disposal of chemicals or biohazards, or for the care and feeding of research animals including diagnosing and treating for minor symptoms of disease and inspecting for health and reproductive condition.
  • Secure, test, record and process data and materials relating to tests and experiments.
  • May assist employees in research projects and experiments, test and teach new methods and techniques, analyze data, develop reports or other documentation and assist with literature research. 

Managerial/admin duties

  • Order or use the bidding process for supplies/equipment and make recommendations for high cost equipment purchases.
  • Interface with company representatives and technicians

  • Communication/interface with MOLB front office
  • Communication/interface with external/internal collaborators

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitor cleanliness of laboratory(ies) and/or specimen habitat.
  • Assignment and oversight of duties for other lab members

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate’s degree in a related field

Experience: 1-year work-related experience

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements: None

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Basic background in laboratory skills (calculating molarities/concentrations for solutions, pipetting, etc.)
  • Ability to set schedules/adhere to deadlines
  • Comfort with using basic computer skills (e.g., scheduling and sending out electronic meeting markers, keeping digital inventories, etc.)
  • Good interpersonal skills – ability to work with others in supervisory, administrative, and support roles.
