UTS OF MASSACHUSETTS INC. is Hiring a Structural Steel and Reinforced Steel Inspector Near , MA

The person in this position is responsible for performing daily inspection of structural and reinforced steel installations at construction projects and monitoring quality and adherence to building code requirements, construction drawings and project specifications. Steel inspectors are required to provide field inspections of structural steel erection, as well as checking the spacing and connection of rebar at construction projects. Inspections include visual and physical inspection and field testing to verify conformance with plans and specifications. Inspectors are responsible for preparing inspection reports regarding observations and field testing of structural and reinforced steel. Inspectors are responsible for communicating findings to the engineer, project manager(s), superintendent(s), iron workers and/or welders on site, and must be capable of collaborating with the construction project team on solutions to potential issues. Inspectors are required to adhere to strict safety standards.

Primary Responsibilities for Position:

  • Performs testing, observation, and inspection as directed in accordance with training and the specified procedures.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, plans and specifications.
  • Provides clear documentation of findings and results in written reports.
  • Provide field inspections for structural steel erection and installation of reinforced steel at commercial and large residential construction sites throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Maine.
  • Performs basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal of field inspection findings and reports.
  • Communicates information to supervisor, project manager and other personnel as required to ensure that steel installations adhere to plans, specifications, construction drawings and building code requirements.
  • Draft inspection reports for review by supervisor and/or project manager, and to be submitted to UTS clients including owners, developers, engineers, general contractors, superintendent and others.
  • May assist more senior inspectors on projects.
  • Maintains equipment and calibration.
  • Follows safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Performs pre-task planning prior to executing work. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects

Primary Requirements for Position:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the construction industry
  • Familiarity with the state and/or local building code(s), including the Massachusetts Building Code.
  • 10-hour OSHA construction safety.
  • Ability to lift 5-25lbs.
  • Ability to climb up ladders, multiple flights of stairs, staging and work on top of roofs and multiple story commercial buildings.
  • Ability to read and navigate contract drawings, submittals, plans, specs, etc.
  • Ability to swing a 3lb sledge hammer.
  • Ability to stand on feet and safely navigate a construction site for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

One or More of the Following Certifications may be Required for Position:

  • American Welding Society (AWS) and/or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification (Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT)).
  • ICC certification (Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel – Welding).
  • ACI Certification in one or more of the following areas:
  • Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
  • Concrete Strength Testing Technician

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 - $35.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 – 60 per week
