Field Safety (Substation Focus)

This position is responsible for advising and instructing on various safety-related topics throughout the field and worksite locations.

Pay:$50 - $60 an/hour

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct risk assessment and enforce preventative measures.
  • Review existing policies and measures and update accordingly.
  • Perform safety related training of employees.
  • Inspect work locations and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g. not using protective equipment) JBO's.
  • Stop any unsafe acts or processes that seem dangerous or unhealthy.
  • Record and investigate incidents to determine causes.
  • Prepare reports on occurrences.
  • Work with outside vendors to obtain required training for apprentices, journeymen, warehouse, and office employees.
  • Conduct classroom and field safety training.
  • Work with all employees and present a positive, safe work environment.
  • Work in all ITC related ROWs, Stations and Facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Maintain all applicable state, federal, and host company standards and regulations.
  • Red Tag Certification maintained throughout employment.
  • Proficient with computer word processing programs.
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of Electrical Transmission stations.
  • Read and understand drawings, schematics, operating instructions, and manuals relating to station transmission equipment.
  • Knowledge of substation construction practices.

Candidates will be evaluated in the following areas to determine qualifications:

  • Depth of experience – possess in depth knowledge of classification specific work tasks due to time in the field, variety of content related experience, and any additional certifications or education related to the content.
  • Location of experience.
  • Communication ability, including verbal and written.
  • Team-work skills.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years field experience as a qualified Journeyman in any substation classification preferred.

Pre-Screen

  • Upon offer, employees may be required to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, background, and/or MVR check.

License & Certifications:

  • Driver License Required.
  • Obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid trainer certification throughout employment.

Travel Requirements:

  • Willing to travel to all regions within the footprint to conduct field audits, attend meetings and perform accident investigations and assist with AARC reporting.

Physical Requirements:

  • RARE (less than 10%): crawling, climbing poles, gripping, climbing ladders, climbing stairs, lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): sitting, stooping, body twisting, climbing on/off truck, reaching, carrying, pushing, pulling.
  • FREQUENT (up to 66%): standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, manual dexterity, reading, range of motion, depth perception, color vision, lifting, balancing, lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): sense of touch, speaking clearly, seeing distant, seeing, hearing-speech range.

Safety

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.

  • Able to identify job site hazards.
  • Exhibits and carries out cognitive problem-solving skills.
  • Able to read, comprehend, and visualize job build and all prints.
  • Works near/around energized, hazardous parts and equipment.
  • Exposed to traffic.
  • Works around excessive noise from machines (bore drill, backhoe, trencher, mini excavator, bucket trucks, digger derricks, concrete saw, jackhammers).
  • May exposed to hot and cold environments, poisonous plants or reptiles, and stinging insects.
