UTHealth Houston Careers is Hiring a Senior Systems Administrator - DAS Linux Support Near Houston, TX

UTHealth is looking for a Senior Systems Administrator to join the Database & Application Support team within the Data Center Operations (DCO). This team focuses on clinical, enterprise, and departmental-level application systems design, implementation, and support. Primary responsibilities include server and database administration, web, SharePoint administration, applications systems and support, systems integration and automation, business intelligence, and working closely with the application owners to help with performance tuning, troubleshooting installations, and upgrades.

The Senior System Administrator will need to have a focus on Linux and a well-rounded background in systems and server support.

Required:

Senior Server Administration: 5 years of Linux Administration experience - including installation, configuration, security, and troubleshooting on-prem physical and virtual servers. Experience working with Dell Server Hardware and Apple Workstations is a plus. Must be able to manage and implement new systems, present technical briefings, and supervise/train other system administrators.

Linux System Management: Strong knowledge of automating system management and system monitoring with Nagios and understanding the utilization of source code repositories. Experience troubleshooting breaks/fixes, daily interaction with peers and customers for all things Unix/Linux, and participation in on-call rotation.

Client/Server Application support: Backend systems support for client-server applications. Understanding basic BASH scripting and web technologies such as IIS and Apache. Understanding of SSL certificate implementation. 

Organizational Skills: Ability to understand project methodology and project management. Use of Microsoft Teams and M365 tools such as Planner.

Communication and Teamwork: Ability to communicate both written and orally to various audiences. Must be able to think logically in solving problems and implement workable solutions. Must be able to resolve all existing and newly discovered problems to move the project toward completion. Must be able to work in a team environment and be a self-contributor, meeting all project-related goals.

Candidates should have a broad scope of technical capabilities that will enable them to handle all aspects of application management and communicate and discuss technical design issues and problem resolution with Application and System Administrators.

Must be able to work with vendors and clients, both internal to IT and external, to understand the needs to scope projects and system environments to satisfy the overall objective of any project.

Availability: UTHealth Senior System Administrators support various mission-critical and 24x7 patient care-focused systems that must be readily available. In order to support these systems, there are many times that scheduled and non-scheduled after-hours work is required. There is also an on-call rotation that has been scheduled months in advance to help triage issues after hours and on holidays.

Additional skills that would be a plus for this position:

  • Experience with systems and database cloud support (AWS, Azure): including EC2, RDS, FSX, and DynamoDB exposure.
  • Preferred knowledge of PostgreSQL Database as well as Oracle, MS SQL Server and FileMaker. 
  • SCCM knowledge and experience: Basic understanding and client troubleshooting.
  • Scripting/Programming Technologies: BASH, Python, PowerShell, .NET, Java, AWS CloudFormation, Terraform
  • Knowledge of clinical systems such as EPIC, DICOM Imaging systems and Digital Dentistry systems.
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools such as Dynatrace, Idera SQL Diagnostic Manager and Monyog for MySQL as well as SolarWinds – Server and App Monitor would be a plus.

Position Summary:

Responsible for complex activities related to system administration. Ensures long-term requirements of multi-systems operations, security, and administration are included in the organization's overall information systems planning. 

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Responsible for all procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems, and computer system software.2. Responsible for all activities related to system administration. 3. Assigns personnel to various projects, directs their activities, and evaluates their work.4. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, configuration, security and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software. 5. Implements operating system enhancements that will improve the reliability, safety and performance of the system.6. Performs programming and testing. 7. Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.8. Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the computer system.9. Determines and implements security and performance improvement activities.10. Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements. 11. Implements system software projects.12. Plans and supervises training of systems administrator personnel.13. Presents technical briefings.14. Participates in formulation and implementation of installation standards and procedures.15. Attends professional conferences and acts in place of supervisor as needed.16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Ability to configure and administer diverse servers and computer operating systems. Familiar with WEB technology, database concepts and networking.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree, training in information technology or related experience in lieu of education

Minimum Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments. 

Strongly Prefer candidates with over five years of Linux Administration experience. 

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
