The Opportunity

UTHealth Houston seeks an experienced strategic, collaborative and entrepreneurial development professional to serve as the next Assistant Vice President for Development. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President for Development and Public Affairs, Kevin Foyle, the Assistant Vice President for Development will serve as a strategic fundraising leader for individual giving by creating and implementingopportunities for pipeline development and individual giving growth that will advance the important vision and mission of UTHealth Houston.

Position Summary

As a member of the Development and Public Affairs leadership team, the Assistant Vice President of Development is responsible for implementing a strategic philanthropic vision, building and managing a robust and effective individual giving program, providing oversite for fundraising initiatives, and managing a select portfolio of complex prospects. This role oversees multiple fundraising and engagement programs and works in partnership with academic leadership to identify and develop funding priorities to propel university wide initiatives forward.

Position Key Accountabilities

1. Oversees frontline fundraising programs including annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, and grateful patients. Provides strategies, leadership, and direction on fundraising and support programs that have university-wide impact.

2. Develops and proactively manages fundraising strategies, serving as the primary interface with deans and other campus leaders focused on philanthropy. Works with university and faculty leadership to formalize strategies and annual plans for achieving the individual giving goals. 

3. Responsible for the planning and implementation of large-scale fundraising initiatives. 

4. Directs and supports staff and provides oversight, guidance, strategic advice, training and mentorship.

5. As a senior member of the fundraising team, manages and solicits a portfolio of complex major and principal gifts prospects.

6. Serves as a collaborative member of the Development leadership team, where the planning, goal setting, tracking, and policy development for Development operations, procedures, programs, and other activities will be discussed, implemented, evaluated, and managed.

7. Fosters collaborative relationships with UTHealth Houston schools and unit leadership in support of fundraising initiatives and when working with prospective contributors interested in those entities as well as when working with other members within the Office of Development.

8. Participates in events/special functions as required.

9. Oversees and manages program budgets to meet program objectives.

10. Serves as an example of best practices and professionalism to all development staff.

11. Manages Human Resources activities for the individual giving teams in regards to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning. 

12. Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded; financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills

• Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) preferred• Ability to be conversant in healthcare education and research of the university to a donor population• Deep understanding of individual philanthropy, the philanthropic process and complex giving structures• Ability to manage a large number of fundraising initiatives, projects and activities simultaneously while engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals. • Ability to effectively communicate complex information clearly in oral and written formats to a variety of audiences and work with senior-level and executive leadership• Ability to understand alumni, donors', and prospective donors' needs and show good judgment and diplomacy• Exhibits Required Job Knowledge• Demonstrates Personal Effectiveness and Accountability• Delivers Quality Student, Patient and Customer Services• Exhibits Teamwork and Collaboration• Exemplifies Strong Ethics, Integrity and Respect for Others• Adheres to All Work Environment, Health, Safety and Compliance Standards• Leads and Develops Others• Promotes and Values Diversity• Sets Vision, Strategy and Priorities for Areas of Responsibility

Minimum Education

Bachelor's degree in a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

Minimum Experience

Ten (10) years of successful experience leading successful fundraising programs within a multifaceted and complex institutional environment, preferably in higher education, healthcare or the nonprofit sector. Demonstrated ability to provide oversite and leadership for teams of fundraising professionals and work in partnership with senior administrators such as deans, faculty, institutional and organization leadership on fundraising initiatives throughout the enterprise.

Physical Requirements

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
