Overview

The Sustainability Coordinator (Program Coordinator III) will exhibit leadership in all aspects of sustainability at USU. These responsibilities largely fall in three categories:

Responsibilities

• Promoting a superior culture of environmental sustainability throughout the University Community—
  • Work with partners within the university, city personnel, and broader community to achieve the university’s sustainability goals, such as reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.
  • For all new building projects, serve as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) representative for Facilities. LEED Silver certification or higher is a requirement for all new university buildings. LEED is a nationally recognized 3rd party verification system for the design, construction, and operation of new buildings. As representative, attend all LEED charrettes with the design team and review LEED documentation of the project from beginning to end. A LEED Green Associate credential is preferred for this position.
  • Work with all Facilities operations' groups to assess and recommend improvements to environmentally sustainable practices for the Facilities organization.
  • Work with USU faculty to include sustainability within student education.
  • Optional: Seek out grant and other in-kind opportunities available to colleges and universities to advance energy efficiency, recycling, and other sustainability initiatives. Work with appropriate Facilities professional personnel on grant opportunities located in their areas of Facilities.
• Acting as an ambassador for the University's Sustainability programs—
  • Act as the Campus Sustainability Council Chair, Co-Chair or Vice Chair, leading, supporting and helping to develop Council goals in all facets of campus Environmental Sustainability. Serve as chair on one or more sub-committees to the Sustainability Council. Supports the three over-arching objectives of Sustainability; Economy - Environment - Equity.
  • Chair quarterly group meetings with Facilities representatives to exchange information and to coordinate continuing sustainability initiatives, identify new opportunities that need more specific attention, and ensure that all Facilities sustainability initiatives are being reported in annual reports.
  • Campus outreach: to include creating and/or facilitating student environmental sustainability projects, prepare annual reports and presentations to faculty, staff and administrative university organizations (such as Faculty Senate, SEA, USUSA, and Executive Council (as requested), and develop other programs that advance campus sustainability awareness and participation. Facilitate outreach to USU Regional campuses to promote system-wide sustainability, coordinating and sharing resources with local sustainability advocates.
  • Oversee the sustainability website and social media accounts for the Sustainability Program.
  • Attend annual AASHE, State, and local conferences, seminars, meetings, etc. as an USU representative.
  • Perform speaking engagements at new student orientation and as a guest in USU classrooms to emphasize University Sustainability programs and resources, and encourage student participation.
  • Optional: Seek out presentation and publication opportunities with AASHE and other associations, and at conferences where Sustainability is a theme or a primary focus area.
  • Optional: Teaching assignment for sustainability related subjects. Opportunities may include guest lecturing in courses or pursuing a 1 or 2 credit academic teaching assignment.
• Leading data collection and reporting on the university’s sustainability efforts—
  • Work jointly with Council representatives and appropriate Facilities personnel to facilitate and report on University Sustainability initiatives, goals, and objectives. Execute or assist on reporting requirements of AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education), to include the university’s Carbon Commitment (previously called the American College and University President's Climate Commitment), STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System), the USU Sustainability Plan, and the USU CAP (Climate Action Plan). Prepare an annual USU Environmental Sustainability Report.
  • Assist with the annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions reporting, in collaboration with other Facilities representatives.
  • Benchmark with other university sustainability programs to share information, supplement professional knowledge, and to add or improve on USU sustainability programs.
• Additionally:
  • Supervising 2-4 interns as funding allows to assist in current initiatives for sustainability. Provide professional mentorship for student interns. Manage the intern payroll.
  • Managing the sustainability budget, ranging from $30,000-60,000 per year.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree - multiple fields accepted. Public Administration, Architecture or Environmental Planning and Design, Business, Marketing, Natural Resources, Sustainability, Engineering are preferable and 2 years of experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Working knowledge of LEED and STARS programs.
• Requires advanced written and oral communication skills and project/process management skills. Intermediate analytical, computer/technical skills are required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Masters degree - multiple fields accepted. Public Administration, Architecture or Environmental Design, Business, Marketing, Natural Resources, Engineering or Architecture are preferable.
• LEED Credential – LEED Green Associate or higher.
• 5 or more years work-related experience.
• Graphic design and public speaking experience abilities are valued skills for this position.

Employees typically work in an office environment and are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily occasional temperature changes. However, in certain instances employees may work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions. Employees could be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Employees nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing). Bending and stooping is occasionally required. Employees nearly continuously listen, hear, and talk.
