Job Description

Journey Maintenance / Construction Specialist

The Department of Health and Human Services is dedicated to provide care for individuals and families in Utah. Utah Division of Juvenile Justice Youth Services (JJYS) provides a continuum of intervention, supervision and rehabilitation programs to youth offenders while assuring public safety.

Employees within Juvenile Justice Youth Services have an opportunity to see the impacts their professionalism and service can do for the well-being of youth in their transition into adulthood.

This is a journey level job. With the State, a Journey Maintenance / Construction Specialist performs a wide variety of skilled maintenance duties requiring independent ability to organize and complete maintenance projects, to include troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems, plumbing, alarm systems, HVAC, repair and re-key locks, repair or replace glazing, painting and preparing all surface types, repair all types of appliances, welding, snow removal, grounds work, roofing, preventative maintenance, keep organized and accurate records and other duties as assigned.

Must be computer literate, create reports, and be able to maintain the equipment numbering system.

Example of Duties

  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems, make adjustments, repairs and / or performs preventative maintenance on control systems, vehicles, equipment, or machinery, etc.
  • Provides technical consultation to originators of project job orders, including development of project plans and related estimates.
  • Builds, fabricates, or repairs structures, equipment, and / or miscellaneous articles from verbal instructions, blueprints and / or working drawings.
  • Welds, solders, brazes, grinds, and / or fabricates various materials.
  • Performs general facility maintenance including painting, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, as well as general cleaning and sanitation.
  • Performs related plumbing, mechanical, painting and pipe fitting, etc., duties.
  • Uses and operates a variety of hand tools, electrical, mechanical, and automotive equipment.
  • Mow, rake, water, and fertilize lawn; plant, transplant, water, fertilize, and trim flowers and shrubs; control weeds;

maintain and clean grounds, parking areas, etc.; remove ice and snow, etc.

Performs emergency preparedness planning and train staff.

  • read and interpret maps, plats, charts, plans, blueprints and / or electrical schematics

Supplemental Information

  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, etc.
