Job Description:

North Central Surgical Center is currently seeking a Full-Time Pharmacy Technician/Purchasing Agent in our Hospital Pharmacy Department

The Pharmacy Purchasing Agent / Pharmacy Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient operation of the hospital pharmacy under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmacy. This role is responsible for managing inventory, maintaining adequate stock levels, and supporting various pharmacy operations.

The role includes responsibility for drug purchasing, drug shortage management, drug recall audits, completion of inventory audits, oversight of USP Chapter <797> compliance

  • Drug recall audit responsibilities for all non-controls, include review of drug recall notices and evaluation of current inventory
  • Inventory audit responsibilities include daily/weekly inventory discrepancy resolution. Other responsibilities include:
    • Management of patient-specific, limited distribution medications shipped directly to the hospital
    • Modification of drug inventory in automated dispensing systems when formulary changes occur
    • Data entry into the track and trace software for supply chain management
  • Help director with USP Chapter <797> compliance responsibilities
  • Upkeep of the IV room, cleaning records and maintenance of temperature requirements.
  • Offer basic technical support for automated dispensing cabinets and other pharmacy computer systems; initiate ticket requests with the help desk or utilities as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Will be responsible for replenishing emergency cart trays, and medication boxes as necessary
  • Fills drug replacement orders to various departments accurately and maintains par levels
  • Returns drug credits to pharmacy stock
  • Assists in processing discharges and issuing credit, if necessary on all returned drugs.
  • Stocks shelves and notes any drugs that will be expiring or in need of ordering.

The Purchasing agent also supports other pharmacy technicians by filling in when needed, pharmacy automation, hazardous medications, and medication safety, to name a few.

  • Makes rounds and delivers labeled medications, controlled substances and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Monitors the accurate documentation on the Controlled Substances Administration Log on the patient care areas.
  • Answers telephone and provides information as requested or refers questions to appropriate personnel.
  • Interprets physicians’ orders and enters into the computer system if required
  • Generates labels and fills drug orders according to physicians’ orders.
  • Refills medication carts with accuracy and exchanges medication cubicles as per schedule.
  • Responsible for unit-dose packaging the bulk medications into unit of use, and accurate documentation of the function.
  • Assists in keeping all work areas clean, neat, and orderly.
  • Attains/maintains knowledge of the pharmacy computer system from the standpoint of a user of the system.
  • The purchasing agent/technician typically works Monday through Friday and may have to work on weekends as necessary.
  • Looking for flexibility to provide coverage for variable shifts as needed Monday through Friday between the hours of 6am-8pm.
Required Skills:
  • High school graduate.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate or State Pharmacy Board requirement.
  • Must have mathematical ability to calculate dosages and amounts required.
  • IV Certification required.
  • A minimum of two to three years of experience demonstrating proficiency in IV preparation and purchasing within a hospital pharmacy setting.
