The OR Resource Nurse is responsible for the operational management of inpatient/outpatient surgery in their line of specialty. Responsible for any/all specialty equipment utilized in the service line managed. Actively engages in customer satisfaction complaints, proactive in resolving those concerns and provide quality services. Plans, coordinates and provides continuous education for the team. This position is also responsible for ensuring all necessary supplies, instrumentation and equipment is available for surgeries for specific surgical service lines. Provides all of the primary functions of the staff RN including: direct patient care, addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment and communicates with the surgeon and anesthesiologist continuously about patient condition.

Salary Range: $42 - $56 (Depending on Experience)

Required Skills:

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Completion of an accredited registered nursing program
  • Five years of nursing experience and/or training preferred

Required License/Certifications

  • Current California Registered Nursing license
  • BLS & ACLS Certificate required

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for printing service line surgery schedule for upcoming week, to determine if all equipment supplies and surgical needs are arranged.   • Expert in all service line related equipment; and strategically plans all service line needs with department management.
  • Oversees all orientation in their service line specialty and assures staff is adequately prepared to work in procedures independently.
  • Assesses and plans education for the department.
  • Proactively plans/coordinates and initiates quality process and performance improvements.
  • Responsible for communicating changes or special needs to surgical team member's and provides follow-up in-service/education as necessary.
  • Communicates all service line updates with management and surgery team.
  • Daily monitors equipment function. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care and operation of all surgical equipment. Directs and assists in maintenance and handling of special equipment and instruments.
  • Responsible for contacting surgeon(s) office regarding special needs for cases scheduled in advance.
  • Coordinate with Materials Management and vendors to ensure supplies/instrumentation are ordered and available at time of surgery.
  • Works with the coordinator regarding service line specific or physician specific staffing plans and training personnel.
  • Quality of service is evaluated and on-going process improvements and necessary performance improvement plans are provided.
  • Available for difficult procedures to support team members and to assist utilizing specialty equipment.
  • Accurately records, handles and labels specimens; demonstrates care of specimens.
  • Adjusts expectations of patient behavior and acts according to the effect medication has on patient.
  • Assessment and reassessment of the patient is clearly and concisely communicated in charting.
  • Documentation meets current standards, policies and procedures and is completed within shift.
  • Carries out established techniques for safe administration of medications and parenteral fluids, as per hospital policies and procedures.
  • Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during all procedures.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care; provides patient and family with teaching/education, as necessary.
  • Demonstrates competence in preparing and cleaning of OR suites before and between cases and after terminal cleaning, based on patients infection class.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions and side effects.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served.
  • Able to interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
  • Effectively communicates with the physician in accounting for all sponges, needles and instruments during and after the procedure and documents in the appropriate area.
  • Ensures Pre-op Checklist is complete (H&P present, informed consent signed, test results present, surgical site identified, etc.) before patient is taken into surgical suite.
  • Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Gives thorough report of patients intraoperative condition to PACU nurse.
  • Is able to open sterile supplies and set up for procedure. Is consistently ready and prepared for assigned cases.
  • Observes behavioral and physiologic changes due to medications, takes appropriate actions and documents.
  • Positions patients safely; pads and protects bony prominences.
  • Preps and drapes patients correctly for all procedures.
  • Responsible for keeping Meditech surgeon's preference cards up to date by editing preference cards in which changes in Meditech.
  • Other duties as assigned
