Responsibilities:
Assists the Manager, Patient Safety with coordinating the overall high reliability education and sustainment efforts to entrench culture of patient safety among the USA Health System staff and faculty; participates in safety education at all levels; participates in the safety event classification process, ongoing common cause analyses and supports development of patient safety related reports to leadership; assists with the data collection for the annual patient safety activities report for the department and organization leadership; participates in and coordinates comprehensive hospital data collection pertaining to patient safety to meet national, state and internal measures; assists in coordinating the Safety Program across the USA Health system by teaching Safety Program content in collaboration with patient safety manager; provides input into the patient safety strategies, identifies opportunities and presents at various hospital committees; ensures timely investigation of patient safety issues; oversees/facilitates the root cause, apparent cause and common cause analysis investigations; collects, analyzes, and presents data and analysis of patient safety trends to hospital committees, as needed; maintains current working knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and statues that affect the Patient Safety Program, including Alabama Medical Board, Alabama Board of Nursing, The Joint Commission, and HIPAA and ensures that services are being delivered in compliance with federal and state safety standards; participates in the development, coordination, and delivering overall education for safety culture of high reliability at USA Health by creating and maintaining curriculum and education data in appropriate modalities; provides guidance and coordinates continuing education opportunities for staff to ensure professional development in patient safety and quality improvement; participates in professional self-development, education programs, and community projects; maintains membership in professional organizations; creates and implements tools for tracking and trending impact of implemented changes; responsible for the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of patient safety initiatives and harm-reduction activities; recommends appropriate actions based on event analysis to the Patient Safety and Adverse Events Committee; facilitates process improvement that will support the reduction of medical errors and other factors that contribute to adverse patient outcomes; demonstrates accountability for financial management, planning, directing, continuous quality improvement, institutional support and representation, and customer service; promotes a culture of safety by rounding on inpatient care units and ambulatory areas to perform coaching and mentoring on patient safety issues; conducts staff interviews, medicals record reviews, root cause analysis (RCA) processes and facilitates action plans for performance improvement; participates in executive leadership patient safety rounds with leadership team; participates in local, state and/or national activities pertaining to patient safety, as needed; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and polices; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, two years of professional direct care nursing experience in an acute care setting, two years of professional experience in patient safety, risk prevention, quality or education, and current licensure with the state of Alabama as a registered nurse. A master’s degree in a related healthcare field is highly preferred. Experience in the management of safety principles is preferred. CPHQ or CPPS certification is preferred. Lean Six Sigma black belt is preferred. Adult ICU experience required
