Duties
In the perioperative environment of care, the Operating Room (OR) nurse provides safe, prompt, and skillful perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing invasive or operative procedures. The range of nursing care covers the continuum of care that includes preoperative, intraoperative, and immediate postoperative care. The acuity of patients ranges from local anesthesia ambulatory surgery patients and diagnostic procedure patients, to major, complex surgical cases. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Leads in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.
- Identifies, analyzes and resolves care problems.
- Implements surgical procedure specific positioning, prepping, and intraoperative care.
- Interprets signs, symptoms, and diagnostic monitoring with reporting, documentation, and implementation of ordered interventions during immediate postoperative period.
- Implements the perioperative environment of care nursing standards of care and practice during all phases of surgical or invasive procedures.
- Operates specialized equipment associated with intra and postoperative patient care.
- Initiates treatment changes in collaboration with other disciplines.
- Collaborates with other disciplines and caregivers and uses group process for decision making in interdisciplinary problem solving.
- Consistently communicates changes in patient condition and treatment plan with interdisciplinary team.
- Facilitates the provision of continuity of care with other health care providers through timely follow-up.
- Educates colleagues and/or students and serves as a preceptor and/or mentor.
- Serves as preceptor/mentor to new/less experienced staff.
- Develops and implements an education plan to meet needs for self and other staff.
- Complies with mandatory training competencies and licensure requirements.
- Supports and enhances patient self-determination.
- Serves as a resource for patients and staff in addressing ethical issues.
- Acts as a patient advocate when patients' self-determination is in question consulting resource such as the Ethics Committee when appropriate.
- Complies with health care system ethics policy in one's own practice.
- Applies the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit level to improve care.
- Leads others in improving care.
- Functions effectively in charge nurse, team leader, and/or leadership roles requiring application of problem solving skills.
- Assesses, plans, implements, documents and evaluates patients preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively.
- Works with the team and/or individual patient in managing the patient's care and environment.

Qualifications
- English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)

Physical Requirements: Intermittent manual lifting or carrying up to 35 pounds, sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, pushing, simple grasping, fine manipulation (including keyboarding), and reaching above shoulder for up to 12 hours per day. Mechanical lifting devices will be used for weights exceeding 35 pounds.
