US Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Pipefitter Near Columbus, OH

Duties

  • Performs preliminary work such as estimating materials required and locating and marking areas where work is to be done.
  • Installing, repairing or replacing sprinkler system controls, to include the diagnosing of system problems as they relate to control valves.
  • Replacing main sprinkler system electric valves and components, i.e., isolation valves, pipe connections, etc.
  • Installs piping and fixtures for lawn sprinkler systems, wash basins, bath tubs, century tubs, water closets, urinals, water cooling units, grease traps, garbage disposal units, etc.
  • Installs and repairs main valves in accordance with specifications and blueprints.
  • Repairs and/or replaces piping and fixtures such as drinking fountains, showers, floor drains, pneumatic tube system, etc.
  • Repairs and adjusts mixing valves on showers and continuous flow tubs.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs hot water tanks, radiators, and instantaneous hot water generators.
  • Install, repair and perform other work on the steam generating equipment, the steam distribution system and the condensate return system. Repairs and/or replaces condensate return pumps, replace bearings and seals.
  • Will install or replace insulation on piping or equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance by clearing stoppages by checking piping, sump pumps, fittings and fixtures for defects and by making necessary repairs.
  • Uses all tools on the trade: pipe threaders, power hack saws, Hilti rotary drill hammer, pipe wrenches, jack hammers, and small hand tools, screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, benders, soldering tools, etc.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on steam traps.
  • Adjust and maintain all alarms on steam and water system.
  • Performs backflow preventer tests as necessary.
  • Receives work assignments from the Supervisory General Engineer, either orally or through written work orders and accomplishes assigned tasks utilizing building plans, diagrams and engineering drawings. The incumbent accomplishes assigned tasks with little or no supervision.
  • The incumbent is responsible for accurately completing work orders and labor reports daily and completing 2237 requests for required parts and materials.
  • The incumbent is responsible for knowing and practicing good workmanship. All rules and regulations applicable to the plumbing trade, i.e., must comply with Building and Plumbing Codes.
  • Work is accomplished at the journeyman level.
  • The incumbent is expected to practice all safety rules pertaining to his/her job.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm

Physical Requirements: The incumbent makes repairs and installations while stooping, kneeling, and working with hands over head, lifting, and using arm muscles tightening connections. There is a considerable amount of dexterity required in performing caulking, joining and fitting and repacking valves, installing unit heaters, repairing steam condensate and hot water pumps. The incumbent frequently handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally the incumbent may lift and carry items that weight over 50 pounds.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.
