US Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Pharmacy Technician Near Fayetteville, NC

Duties

Major Duties:
All work on prescription/medication orders and intravenous solutions is checked by a pharmacist; other work is reviewed for overall accuracy of results. The employee will rotate among various sections within the Fayetteville VA Medical Center (FVAMC) Pharmacy Service, as determined by scheduling and workload requirements, performing duties as assigned in order to provide technician coverage on all operating shifts. This position requires basic computer knowledge and familiarity with the use of the computer systems. The pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision and goals of the FVAMC. Including but not limited to:

  • Selects correct medication, fluid vehicle and makes accurate mathematical calculations using extensive knowledge of IV products and sterile manufacturing practices. Delivers IV admixtures on time as scheduled.
  • Reviews medication profiles of inpatients and fills individual medication bins.
  • Responsible for the proper daily filling, checking (tech checks tech) and delivery of the unit dose carts as scheduled. Proper filling includes filling the correct bin with the correct drug in the correct amount. Exchange of the cart entails taking the cart to the proper ward and exchanging the bins, including adjusting bins to reflect patient admission, discharges, and transfers.
  • Completes monthly inspection of assigned areas to monitor quantity of drug stock, expiration dates, conditions of storage, and crash cart integrity and expiration date. Reports problems to nursing supervisor/pharmacy supervisor.
  • Prepares external pharmaceutical products by compounding when required medications are not commercially available.
  • Responsible for answering the telephones in the outpatient telephone area. All calls within the queue are to be answered in a timely, courteous and professional manner. Answers patient questions regarding the status of their prescription, refill information or other general questions.
Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
  • Requires extensive technical knowledge of drug and medication brand names, generic names/chemical names, storage and expiration date requirements, dosage forms, systems of weights and measures, and medical terminology to interpret provider orders and verify that the correct drug, dosage form, strength, and dosage are prepared and delivered.

Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the position requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, bending and stooping, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 40 lbs, pushing and pulling of large carts. The job may include significant time standing or sitting at a computer terminal.
Loss of Credential: An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/ registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.

Education

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
