The Provider will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary VA Illiana Primary Care PAIN clinic team (i.e. Primary Care, Behavioral Health, Mental Health, Pharmacy, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation). The Provider will evaluate and treat patients with pain and assist with our institution's effect towards comprehensive, effective and safe pain management for our veterans. Along with our pain management specialists , provider serving in this role will also assist our Primary Care clinics for to manage pain related difficult cases, coordinating services with our other pain management specialists.
The selected Nurse Practitioner scope of practice and duties include but are not limited to:
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is responsible and accountable for assessment, diagnosis, and management of patient problems, including prescription of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic intervention. A Scope of Practice will guide advanced practice beyond basic education and is renewed every two years via the credentialing process.
a. The scope of practice of an advanced practice nurse includes, but is not limited to, each of the following: Advanced practice nursing by certified
b. Practice as an advanced practice nurse means a scope of nursing practice, with or without compensation, and includes the registered nurse scope of practice.
c. The scope of practice of an advanced practice nurse includes, but is not limited to, each of the following:
1) Advanced nursing patient assessment and diagnosis.
2) Ordering diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures, performing those tests and procedures when using health care equipment, and interpreting and using the results of diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures ordered by the advanced practice nurse or another health care professional.
3) Ordering treatments, ordering or applying appropriate medical devices, and using nursing, medical, therapeutic, and corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
4) Providing palliative and end-of-life care.
5) Providing advanced counseling, patient education, health education, and patient advocacy.
6) Prescriptive authority as defined in Section 65-40 of the Act.
7) Delegating selected nursing activities or tasks to a licensed practical nurse, a registered professional nurse, or other personnel. (Section 65-30 of the Act
8) Independently manages a panel of patients with acute and chronic health conditions with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention using evidence-based practice.
9) Develops and implements an individualized plan to achieve optimal population health and disease management.
10) Demonstrates leadership and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.
11) Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.
12) Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
13) Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services.
14) Provides education to patients and their families.
15) Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
