US Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Health Technician (Emergency Medical Technician) Near Tampa, FL

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs clinical tasks using appropriate techniques such as 12 lead EKG's, phlebotomy procedures, peripheral intravenous insertion and other within scope of practice tasks directed by the RN or Provider.
  • Follows proper patient transfer techniques and body mechanics.
  • Responds to On-Station emergencies and transports critical patients on VA property.
  • Provides efficient and immediate care to critically ill and injured patients under the direction of a physician or registered nurse.
  • Renders emergency medical care to adult medical and trauma patients; required to opening and maintaining an airway, ventilating patients and performing CPR as necessary.
  • Provides pre-hospital emergency care of simple and multiple system trauma.
  • Aids in the search for medical identification; provides technical support to the Emergency Department Physicians and Nurses.
  • Serves as the first clinical contact for incoming patients when assigned to the Triage area.
  • Responsible for properly lifting, positioning, securing and transporting patients.
  • Applies and removes wound dressings; applies and removes assistive/adaptive aids based upon patient progress; supervises patients on special observation status.
  • Maintains interactive relationship with patients under observation; safeguards patient privacy and data against unauthorized disclosure; charts patients physical and emotional progress.
  • Observes, records and reports general and specific physical and behavioral signs and symptoms indicated of change in a patient's condition.
  • Assist with provision of emotional and physical comfort of patients while in transport; operates and monitors applicable medical equipment related to emergency treatment.
  • Performs other related as assigned.
Work Schedule: Various tours,including weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements: Duties require extension periods of standing and walking; working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and similar activities; must be able to utilize good body mechanics and have physical strength to lift up to 125 lbs (individually) or 250 lbs (in a two-person lift team).

Individual Occupational Requirement for Health Aid and Technician (0640) Series (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can't be waived. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Please clearly state your experience in resume.
In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirement, applicants must also meet the specialized experience.
GS-6 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Handling emergencies using basic and advanced life support equipment and skills; Providing emergency care of simple and multiple injury situations, such as controlling of hemorrhage, bandaging wounds, and immobilization of extremities; Performing patient care procedures, such as intravenous catheter insertion, venipuncture, irrigation, and suctioning; and performs 12-lead EKG's, connecting patients to cardiac and telemetry monitors and utilizing patient transport emergency stretchers.
This position requires the incumbent to be Basic Life Support (BLS) certified. Certification may be obtained during employment.
Driver's License: Must hold and maintain an unencumbered valid state of Florida driver's license and the ability to operate and drive a facility emergency response vehicle to transport patients on the hospital grounds during an emergency.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-6 level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
