US Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Health Tech (Radiology) Near Brooklyn, NY

Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Assists patients with completion of applicable consent forms, screening forms, questioners and other forms required.
  • Scans documents into patient records when necessary.
  • Answers telephones in a timely and professional manner.
  • Substitute's clerical staff when needed, answering telephones, registering patients for exams, obtaining necessary information for scheduling of appointments.
  • Burns DVDs of patient images and imports images and reports to PACS as needed according to departmental policies and guidelines.
  • Assists technologists and nurses with patient care before, during, and after Radiation Procedures.
  • Assists with QA activities as needed.
  • Provides for the privacy of the patient by appropriate draping. Assures patients waiting for examinations are properly covered and draped.
  • Observes and monitors patients closely during the procedure. Notifies the Technologist of any change in patient's condition.
  • Maintains sterile techniques and handles injectables. Assist during any sterile procedure performed and supplies inventory needed for the ongoing procedure.
  • Utilizes DHCP hospital computer system to obtain clinical test results or other necessary information for the staff Oncologist and Technologist. Registers new patient for procedure when necessary. Cancels appointment when necessary.
  • Stocks rooms with linens and supplies. Communicates with Laundry when linen supply is low and not sufficient for patient care necessary.
  • Collaborates with the CT scan and linear accelerator with Technologist in recommending equipment and supplies. Informs purchasing agent of existing needs. Assures availability of sufficient amount of supplies needed for the operations of the area for the next 72 hours. Notifies purchasing agent of low stack volume in advance.
  • Prepares CT scan and linear accelerator suite for next procedure. Changes used linens, discard used syringes, and notify EMS for terminal cleaning when needed. Cleans and disinfects units after each procedure.
  • Prepares treatment room for next procedure. Changes used linens, discard used syringes, and notify EMS for terminal cleaning when needed. Cleans and disinfects treatment room after each procedure. Wipes floor near power injector area to prevent form contrast stains.
  • Routinely checks for expired items in all areas of assignment. Rotates inventory to insure usage prior expiration dates.
  • Assures that all working areas are free from clutter and items endangering patient and staff safety.
  • Assures patient privacy at all times. Protects patient sensitive information and records.
  • Assures the safety of the patient by the proper use of equipment supports and /or restrains.
  • Assists in moving and positioning the patient as related to the specific procedures.
  • Practices safe handling of all patients and materials utilizing Radiation equipment provided.
  • Keeps patients informed of the timeliness of their procedures.
  • Enters data into the ARIA/ IMPAC system, including registering patients, and the entry of inventory items both upon initial receipt and those used during a procedure.
  • Attends to acutely ill patients. Explains procedure to patient. Offers emotional as well as physical support through the procedure. Assists in moving and positioning the patient as related to the specific examination.
  • Sterilizes, dries, sorts and puts away instruments and equipment. In addition, follows prescribed procedure for cleaning the room after each procedure and for special care following contaminated cases.
  • Routinely checks for expired items in all areas of assignment. Rotates inventory to insure usage prior expiration dates.
  • Assures that all patient care areas are free from clutter and items endangering patient and staff safety.
  • Communicates with technologist on duty regarding patient scheduling. Communicates with Medical Wards and with the Emergency Department regarding patient scheduling for examinations. Answers telephones in, collecting patient information, phone numbers and related information.
  • Communicates with technologist on duty regarding patient scheduling. Communicates with medical wards and with the Emergency Department regarding patient scheduling for examinations.
  • Communicates with clerical staff regarding patient scheduling and other procedures. Communicates with Technologist, Physician, Physicists and Nursing staff regarding patient concerns.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
GS-06 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Must have knowledge of Radiation Oncology internal system such as; Multi-Access IMPAC, ARIA, and other related software that is been used in Radiation Oncology center.
Specialized experience includes: Knowledge of Radiation Linear Accelerators. Knowledge of Radiation Therapy procedure and anatomy. Must be familiar with all the techniques and immobilization equipment, i.e. Head & Neck Board, Vac-lock, Wing board, and Breast Board all necessary equipment for the procedures. Demonstrates skill and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs and to provide the care needed.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have; Successfully completed at least one-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a Bachelor's degree) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Health Care Technician position.
OR
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education.
Preferred Experience: In Radiation Oncology
The full performance level of this vacancy is 06.
Successful completion and current of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

Physical Requirements: Position requires long periods of standing and some bending, lifting and reaching both patients and supplies. Positioning patients who are unconscious or disabled requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees.
