The successful candidate will research and develop novel optical metrology for film-level measurement of Heisenberg exchange on industry-relevant ultrathin ferromagnetic films as part of a CHIPS project. Additionally, the successful candidate will work closely with collaborators to correlate measurements with device performance, and aid in the development of models that capture the impact of exchange on magnetic reversal.
Key responsibilities include: Design in 3D CAD software and real-space validation of a compact optical sampling head (with multiangle adjustability, high repeatability, and computer control) to fit in the gap of a high field magnet; execution of measurements on a range of films of increasing magnetic and optical complexity; development of data analysis methods to extract the magnetic moment and Heisenberg exchange of relevant layers with appropriate uncertainty analysis; present research results and submit for publication, and mentor students and post-doctoral researchers towards measurement and system deliverable goals.
